I went down to the yard today and it was thick with fog. I could barely find my mare in the field! I have only just gathered the courage recently to go hacking alone and didn't think I could go out - but gathered my courage and out we went. It was really spooky, super still and blanketed in mist. There was absolutely no one around. We went cantering into the trees and the gloom and I was scared and awed by the beauty of it all in equal measures. So as this is the beginning of our life together sometimes going out alone I was just wondering what kind of weather other people are disconcerted by and why...

Currently, rain. The water meadows are all flooded, the ground is soaked and if we get another heavy rainstorm coinciding with a spring tide we will have the river in everyone's front room again :(

Wind.
Having had my house damaged in storms, I worry about trees coming down :(

I agree - it never bothered me until the 'hurricane' in 1987 when we had to evacuate our family house at 2 in the morning and 100 foot beech trees were falling like matches. I do makes sure now that all our trees are well maintained and would not fall on the house if they fell at all. And I'm pretty strict about our family not going out on the roads, and my boys not going down to the muck heap which is on the edge of the woods when it is really windy (we live on top of a hill and it does get REALLY windy).

Wont ride in fog as have to go out on busyish road every time I ride but if theres direct off road hacking then I quite like cantering in to the fog.

wind!! too many trees to walk under!! i dont want me or my horse to get squashed plus neither like the wind... also storms as i dont like being out in them :o

At the moment Wind- had a bad dream the other night about a storm that blew the roof off the stables!

Fog can be spooky sometimes- we occasionally get 'sea fog' which is really bad, but other than that I don't mind it.

Thunder and lightening! Got a phobia that one of my horses might be struck by lightening after hearing about 2 horses I knew who died this way and then a friend who lived close by had her trampoline struck by lightening in the summer. I even bring them in from the field if I hear thunder on the horizon and know its coming in my direction.

My horse is kept on a yard on the top of a hill, we get wind on a daily basis even when there is none down in the village. I ride in heavy gale force winds, rain, light snow, fog and of course glorious sunshine. The only problem is ice...would rather give him a week off than have him go down on the road! Been there done that LOL!

For riding, I don't go out if its icy - I live on country lanes with nowhere to go but up and down steep hills. I wouldn't risk them slipping, so they lose fitness in winter months. I also avoid fog.

For driving, snow, as I have 200+ miles to work!

Please say you have direct off road hacking..

Hate riding in wind, don't mind the wet, but if it's windy and wet will skip riding. Not usually fair weather, but wind and rain is a big no no. And when it's icy. Will avoid the roads at all costs if it's icy, more than a drizzle (unless get caught out mid hack) or misty/foggy.

I am quite paranoid about riding on roads and we have to go on some quite busy ones to get to bridleways so I wouldn't ride in heavy fog, wouldn't mind if all off road but would probably refrain from galloping into the abyss in case we knocked someone flying! Don't mind wind and rain as we don't really have many trees, mostly hedges! I did have a spell with my old share horse where it would start thundering as soon as we left for a hack, what with her being quite spooky they were cut short to a trot round the block and home which is a right pain when you have allocated sharing days!

None really. I quite like extreme weather, snow, fog, thunderstorms, heavy wind etc. I'm only put off doing stuff in it on a common sense basis. Eg I wouldn't ride down the road in heavy fog or on ice. Or when its so windy there's dustbins & fence panels flying about. I love cantering through fog. And nothing like the silence of hacking early on when everywhere is white with snow.

Wind. I hate it. Can deal with all the rest but wind no. Even put in earplugs at night if windy so i don't have to hear it. And having a spooky mare doesn't help
;)

^^ This.

no weather scares me but rain blummin annoys me:mad: my fields have been wet for what seems like a year and the winter field is already a bog:(

i don't ride in strong winds as I livery on a farm and the wind winds the cattle up as well as the other horses, stupid, over excited steers (with horns:eek: ) rampaging round the fields does not make for a peaceful or safe ride.

Strong wind and rain together, don't mind them seperatly, ice and fog. Can't ride anywhere without going on the roads so have to be sensible about safety. :) If I'm not riding, not bothered about any weather, but then have never really experienced extreme weather where we live.

Thunder and lightning, had some very very scary storms back home, and horses and local folk killed by lightning, even in my house i am scared.

I dont like riding in wind - tree falls worry me

ICE - wont turn out in it too dangerous. Will hand lead to stretch legs butthats it heard too many horror stories to risk it
