Well, think we are almost ready to take the plunge and take my little boy (he's 2 1/2) and his pony to their first lead rein show. Obviously, its very early days and it will be just local to start with for a bit of fun. I am new to all this pony showing malarkey and am a bit confuzzled about turnout and what 'type' of pony she may be. At local level we will just be in general LR classes but if they do well/enjoy it then may be tempted to venture into the scary world of showing proper.

There seems to be lots of different classes - show hunter, hunter type etc so would welcome your opinions as to what 'type' Honey (Genghis to her little friend) is:

She is by Beckside Little Toff out of a Sec A so don't think she's eligible for M&M classes. Opinions and cc of her welcome. She moves very correctly with a lovely floaty trot (flicky toes!!) and carries herself really well.

Also, I don't want to spend a fortune now on jacket etc for my little boy if its not correct later on. He already has a lovely navy velvet hat and I think she would look better in navy as I did a class with her and my neice a few months ago in tweed and because of her colouring it didn't seem to stand out. If tweed is correct for her type though we'll have to work with it!!

There will probably be a million further questions as we progress with this new venture!

If you are going to do a bit of low key showing I would suggest going along to a local show, perhaps a local riding club and have a look at the entries in their classes.
You could show her in welsh part bred classes. She would have to be plaited and trimmed and your rider would need to wear a solid colour jacket (black or navy) shirt and tie with matching tie and button hole and coloured browband. If you show them as show hunter pony you need to plait and trim but wear a hacking jacket, shirt and tie and button hole and a plain flat bridle. Your outfit should complement theirs. I would check the rules of the show as well as some don't allow children riding unless they are over 4 years old and you don't want to go to all that trouble and find you can't compete when you get there. You may want to change your saddle to one without the handles if you step up ( the Saddle Company do a nice small showing saddle ideal for little bottoms, when my daughter first started at local level I attached a pelham rounding to the front D rings, it looks less obvious) and you will need to take the martingale stoppers off your reins. Have fun she looks a lovely little pony!
