I'm moving from Full to DIY livery soon, and I'm not sure which shavings fork to buy. (I'll be using shavings on rubber matting.)

Your input would be much appreciated!

Future Forks are the best..... and I have tried loads. They come in 2 lengths - I find the longer one the best, but I am quite tall. They are expensive but well worth the investment and very robust.
Tx

I found fyna-lite shavings forks are great, had mine 2 years used every day sometimes twice a day and it still looks like new! Whatever you do dont buy a cheap plastic one infact just dont buy a plastic one at all i find them horrible!

I like my fynalite one - I got one with a longer handle as I have a bad back. I use it to poo pick the fields as well as I find it far easier than those strange poop scoop things...

ditto this, I love my future fork - much nicer than a metal shavings fork, but sturdier than most other plastic ones. As said they're not the cheapest (~£35 I think?) but well worth the initial outlay.

eta also ditto to go for the longer one, the shorter ones (whatever the brand) are impossible to get good leverage with and much harder on your back.

Thank you Tamsinkb - I've googled these and will consider them - especially if it's lightweight yet robust.

I won't forget what you said :-) Someone at my current yard have bought a cheap plastic one, and the prongs started braking off after only a few muck outs! A friend swears by hers too so the Fyna-lite may be the one that I go for...

I love my fyna lite. I used to have one that lasted me about 10 years. I bow have the pink one.
Thanks Loubymiller. It's good to know that it would be money well spent!

Holly Hocks, I've got a bad back too so I will definitely take your advice and buy one with a longer handle. I actually thought it would be better to get just a cheap lightweight kiddies short one, as I thought it would be better on my back - but thanks to your advice I'll get a decent full length fork :)

Thank you Malibu_Stacy. Maybe I'll try and find out the actual weight of the Future Fork - if it's much lighter than the Finalite, then it may be a better one for me with my bad back. I'll make sure I get one with a longer handle :o)

Future fork if you want light weight - brilliant
Fynalite if you don't mind something heavier - I really rate these having had mine for over 10 years!

Another vote for future fork. Light and well balanced but unlike cheap plastic copies picks up heavy poo piles without feeling as though tines are going to snap. Had mine 5 years and still going strong after mucking out several stables a day (YO nicks it!) and poo picking. Brilliant especially for aubioise or flax bed.

Thanks PaintmeProud (love your Chico!). I've never even heard of the Fine-Tines Fork. It looks like a very cleverly designed fork, and would be ideal if I try wood pellet bedding in the future.

Thanks for all the other replies too!
;-)

Definitely future fork! I was sceptical since its plastic and I was determined to have a metal one thinking it would be stronger. Bought a future fork on advice of YM and never looked back - so much lighter than a metal one and just as strong :)

Definitely Future Fork - I have a bad back too and the future fork is lightweight. You may need to consider if you want a handle or just the poll at the end if you decide on another brand. I paid £25 for one when I went to Hickstead last month but usually are over £30 in feed stores etc. my way.

Future Fork - We have two, so both Dad & I can muck out at the same time, as neither of us like the FynaLite fork that we have. That is now reserved for raking the school.

I love my Future Fork...as sad as that sounds!!!

In 9 years i've only had to replace the screw that holds on the head twice and one of those times was because my big lump stood on it!!

It's light, comes in 2 sizes which is great as i'm quite tall so having the extra long one really helps, it copes poop picking in the fields and having a plastic head it's not as dangerous as the metal ended forks to be hung up etc

There are even a couple of other liveries who "borrow" my fork as they prefer it to their own and one girl even went and bought her own after using mine!!

They are a bit pricey but they last.

I bought a Finalite, but I find it 's too heavy to use if you have several boxes to do, it makes my arms ache. I do use it outside, though, it's great for poo picking.

I have a very old Ames fork, lightweight, plastic with a wooden handle, the tines are pointed . I love it and have tried to find another one without success.

I have just had a look at both Fine Tines and Future Forks, I can't quite make out if the ends of the tines are rounded or pointed, I prefer pointed tines, could someone let me know please? Sorry to hijack :o

This makes me smile! I got fed up with finding the evening shift had broken yet another fork at work and having to waste time searching for a working one so went out and tried various ones at Your Horse Live (got some funny looks :) )and picked the Future fork although it was expensive. It hasn't let me down but I did take it home after work everyday.
The others at work barely lasted 6mnths,mine lasted 3yrs(and I MUCK out properly)Unfortunately I got a bit lazy a few months ago and started leaving it at work with strict instructions of death by muck heap if anyone touched it.I know it got taken down to the gallops to shovel the new surfice >( and then one day I picked it up and it was broken!!!!!!!!
Had to start using the cheap replicas that were not as strong and had curved bottoms and then the other day the boss presented me with a brand new Future Fork :D,she'd had a real struggle to find one...I love my muck fork(Sad ain't I?)
