Ok have decided to take the plunge and have a go at showing for a bit of fun and something a little different!! - haven't done any showing for about 10 years now (pony club days!!) so can class myself as a complete novice!! I have a very nice 7yr old bay TB x WB mare who i currently event successfully at BE prenovice, it's just soooo expensive nowadays so thought i'd do something a little different in between and for a bit of fun! - have picked up two schedules for local / low key shows taking place in the next few weeks, but there are just so many differnt classes I don't know where to start!!
Riding Horse, Show Hunter, Working Hunter, Novice Hunter, Small Hunter!!! Not sure where to start!!!

She isn't a fine leggy TB, but am told she is well put together with nice paces. She has a good jump and makes a nice shape over a fence so i'm thinking the working hunter...???? but what is a novice hunter and small hunter??? do you jump in those classes?? - is the show hunter a fine horse/ TB type or a heavy type horse?? - as you can tell i have no idea!!

She events in a full cheek snaffle with a french link and a grackle noseband and martingale..(which she also wore when I went hunting) what tack do you advise for the classes??
Many thanks in advance for your help!!! xx

Novice hunter is normally for horses that havn't won a first place in any hunter classes or a certain amount of money. Small hunters are only allowed to be upto 15.2hh and are based on the middle weights but a bit smaller, you shouldn't have to jump in either classes. The hunter classes are divided into how much weight your horse can carry lightweight hunters are usually thoroughbred or similar, about 16hh - 16.2hh, and should have about eight and a half inches of bone. Middleweight hunters are bigger - up to 16.3hh and up to nine inches of bone. Heavyweight hunters are often not much taller, but have up to ten inches of bone. The heavyweight hunter needs to be able to carry fourteen stone for a day's hunting. While bigger and heavier than the TB types in the LW classes, they should still have quality and not be coarse.
For the WH that tack sounds fine but if your going to do a flat hunter class you will need a flat caveson noseband, snaffle/pelham with two reins or a double bridle. All your tack should be brown and workman like. Straight cut saddle for the flat classes and you will be able to get away with a gp for the WH classes. Make sure you have a descrite nummnah underneath that matches the colour of your horse.
Add some piccys so we can tell what type she is.
Hope that helps a bit :D
