My previous two horses have had manes that lie to the right hand side of the horses neck (left as you stand looking at the horse)
My current mare's mane lies on the left hand side of her neck.
Someone said to me a couple of days ago.....does her mane naturally lie to that side or have you brushed it over that side. To which i replied, it naturally falls that side and they thought that was odd.

TBH i dont really worry too much which side it lies.....after i have pulled a mane it always looks like a complete disaster area anyway so the fact that it lies "the wrong side" is prob the least of my worries :D:D:D

BUT.....if i was to plait her for showin (local shows...we are not HOYS standard by any stretch of the imagination ;) ) should her plaits be on a specific side of her neck?? if so....which side

Home made moroccan spicy chick pea soup anyone?? (fails to mention the fact that i put maybe a few too many chilli flakes in it :D :D)

manes can fall on either side, i know horsemen who always shove them over on one side before it's dried on the newborn foals :)

i always understood that manes should be plaited on the right hand side, though i know people who compete low levels with a left set.

I believe it should lay on the right side for showing. My boy's lays on the left though and I'm not worried as I don't plan to do any serious showing classes.

Yes its the right - or thats the correct side to plait on.

Every horse I've owned had a mane that fell to the left. Most seem to. I think it was rotten of whoever made the rule!

It's the right side, but horses from abroad very commonly have manes which lie to the left.... :S

No idea why! If you do need to change which side it lies on there are hundreds of ways to do so aswell, so wouldn't worry!

my horse likes to be helpful, his lies both sides naturally :D but it's pretty easy to brush to one side or another!

Yes, you are all correct in saying it "should" fall on the right side, but it will naturally fall to the side on which it was laying inside mummy. Have you noticed that they are usually more flexible on the side that the mane falls ?????

I've always had horses whose manes lie to the left....now I have one who came with a centre parting:rolleyes:

The only thing that irritates me is...cos he's an arab and his mane is down past his shoulders, it was getting tangled up in the 'spare' loop of rein that usually hangs by the left shoulder.

So...I've trained it to go to the ''correct'' side with ample use of conditioner and a comb.:D

is it just a coincidence that the mane lies on the side that the judges sees when showing in hand (leading from the left) and when ridden you always start on the right rein?

my yearling currently sporting some lovely plaits to train his mane over...again!

Most of mine have manes falling to the right (offside) - I believe this is correct but for what reason I don't know.
One mare , and her yearling filly, both have theirs falling to the left ( nearside ) . Is this genetic ???
Mine are Exmoors , so no problem about plaiting , but should I try to train baby's mane to the offside for showing ?

That's exactly what I was going to say!

yes, i just plait my lads over for a couple of days at a time to help train it over. i dont leave the plaits in too long though or too tight as i would imagine it would damage the hair follickles and id end up with a bald pony lol
