So at some point my 17 year old gelding's confirmational flaws are going to catch up with him and I will have to retire him. So I have decided to breed a nice foalie from him for me to event. The qu is, which stallion should I use? My horse is black so I was thinking if I used a grey stallion I would get a piebald, which would be just lovely. Any ideas??

How exciting, I would use Linamix, a TB.I am sure he would have piebald genes. Would you be interesting in part share of the foal. It would be a valuable and quite unique offspring.

might struggle to get a foal from a gelding :p

Although a piebald from a black gelding and a grey stallion would certainly be valuable.
What about using a zebra stallion so you could get a cool stripey foal?

I did mention it would be a unique foal and very valuable.

Oooh, he is lovely AA, just googled him. The only issue is with him being a racehorse I would worry that the foal would naturally be faster than my gelding. I am concerned he would feel a bit inferior if he was unable to keep up with his own offspring and that would in some way emasculate my horse. Do you have any recommendations for a slower grey sire?

This is just a silly idea in my view. Where on earth would I get a zebra from?! Keep it real please!!

How about Abbotsford Ice Cube, grey stallion, short legs would make him unable to run too quickly.

I have a grey gelding you can use. He's not fast, because he broke himself a few months ago, but he's athletic. He seems to have the piebald gene

Oh yes, I like the sound of a shetland/warmblood cross. Would that make the foal a warm shet?

Well there's a zorse for sale currently, this one: http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/news/zorse-zebra-cross-horse-for-sale-512353

Or you could steal one from a zoo?

Otherwise, there are some cracker stallions on donedeal, might be worth a look at. What about this one?

I love the look of this one. And he is advertised as the heaviest horse in Ireland so he clearly is secure with his own shape and size, I wouldn't want a stallion thats always watching its waistline.

Auslander, your horse is gorgeous. Would he be interested in doing AI tho, as I can't bear the thought of my horse doing "the sex".

Aww, that's a shame about Zulu. He was at work at Beamish for the Georgian fair and me and kiddo went to see him especially. Lovely beast.

Or how about this coloured, then you might get a tri coloured foal?! It doesn't look very fast, either. (I know why that cow's laughing! :eek3:)

Thanks CT. Isnt he stuck in a gate tho? I dont know that I want to put my horse to something that stupid. My horse is quite the intellectual so I am not sure what they would have to talk about in the evenings if the stallion is a thicko.

Not mine, thank God (He is a career box rester). He's a bit special, so probably wouldn't know how to do the beast with two backs. AI would be the way forward. At least with two geldings, you know you'll get a gelding. I hear rumours that foals sired by stallions have to be cut

That's a bloody good point Auslander. I don't have enough money to get the foal cut so that would be a good cost saving if we got a gelding from the outset.

To everyone else encouraging the warmshit/giantshit outcome, I fear you haven't thought through the ramifications of your plan. Shetlands are hairy, my warmblood is not. How the hell would i know how best to overrug it??

That's very true. Also, how would you know if you could go barefoot or not?

Do you think a giantshit would be happy to wear bling?

I fear bling would be wasted on a giantshit. Isn't there a well known phrase that you can't polish a turd? I guess the same logic would apply.
