Does anyone have any views to the size/weight limit for rolling arenas? Im looking to purchase an old tractor but wondered if it need to be a small tractor from the point of view of damaging the drains in the arena.

I wouldn't know about weight limits etc, but most people I know who need one for maintaining their school, or even their paddocks, have something like a Fordson Major or a Dexta (Dextas are smaller) and they do a great job!

I have now spoken to my OH, the tractor expert.....

He said NEVER get anything bigger than a Major - it will be too heavy and will make ruts in the school, unless you have flotation tyres. Wider tyres are better full stop for that type of work, due to the lower ground pressure.

OH says there is a place in Bristol called 'Affordable Tractors' where you can get Japanese import mini tractors at a very reasonable cost. The little vintage tractors - grey Fergies, old Masseys and the Fordsons - are lovely but costly, and if you arent looking to take it round the steam fairs, you may as well get a modern tractor!

Kubotas and Yanmars are good too, he says!
