I understand that road planings or Type 1 crushed granite/sub base is sufficient material to put in gateways. Has anyone experience of this?

Do I just lay it on top of the grassy area or do I need to prepare the area first? Its already a bit muddy - will this matter much?

Wickes do a tonne of sub base at £38.24 a tonne, and my friend and I have a couple of areas on a grassy track leading down to our paddock and then the gateway of her horses paddock and my horses paddock. Would two tonne suffice?

They will fork lift it onto your trailer/horsebox for you too.

we used coal dust in our gateways, was around £25 a tonne and worked beautifully!! just chuck it on top of mud

Worth checking with your local quarry, ours does 10 tonnes hardcore for £100 inc delivery.
Ideally you should remove the topsoil but as long as you put plenty planings or hardcore down, should be fine.

I use road planeings straight onto the field they disappear eventually then I add more .
I buy a lorry load .
I don't like hardcore it edges are too sharp and from the quarry near us it's an intrusive grey colour when dry .
Planeings are cheap and easy to get .
