So lovely OH is getting me a couple of wooden poles from the timber merchant tomorrow and I'd like to paint them up.

I searched the forum to find out what type of paint to use and people say a layer or two of undercoat is best to keep them going for longer.

Can you reccomend one as I have no experience of wood painting :o

Also if you could inspire me with colour and patterns by showing me your home painted poles that'd be great thanks! :D

Haven't got any pictures to show but I used b&q cheap undrecoat 2 coats - it states on tin for interior and exterior and the used any exterior wood paint I coud find in nice colours ( it's not very cheap even for a little tin)

Mine have been outside all winter and still look as good as new!

Probably not what you're looking for, but I saw it on the internet and had to share:

:D

About the patterns, I would think that it is only your own imagination that puts up any limitations. Some other examples from the internet:

(Since some paints the poles to imitate real branches, as an example, this is how real birch branches can look.)

I find it a tiny bit fascinating how different colours and patterns change how the poles look, even though at the same time the poles still basically looks like a pole. I'm ending my reply with a wing, because I like what the different colours of blue does to this wing:

Ha ha! Thanks FL, trust you to find some nice photos on the interwebz ;)

Oh has decided he wants to paint the wings in the style of the mystery machine with blue and green complete with orange flowers (he knows I like scooby doo and I'd kill for a mystery machine :D) I may even be able to persuade him to jigsaw cut out some actual mystery machine shapes to stick on to fillers!

So my first set of poles will be blue and green I think :)
