My 17 year old NF has not come out of this winter well at all. He's not horribly underweight, but I've never seen him this skinny. When he's working, you can just (only just) see his ribs.... He's also just not "firing" like he usually is either, and he's touching fences which just isn't like him. But it's quite sporadic, some days he feels just fine....

If he wasn't INCREDIBLY needle phobic I'd have him blood tested, but that has to be the last resort (he nearly killed the vet when she tried to sedate him a few years back....)I have spoken to her and she agrees with this. He does have melonomas.... Which is a worry....

He's been on Winergy Senior since Dec with ad lib haylage.

A month ago I added alfa beet and a bucket of Graze on. It has made a little difference, he has put on a little weight, but not much.... Definitly not enough.

So am gonna change his feed for one last ditch attempt before going down the blood test line. I'm gonna take him off the winergy and put him on Alfa Oil, which is all he's had (with a vit and min supplement) in previous winters and then I thought I'd give him a veteran mix to see if it gives him some more sparkle as well as weight... What do you think? Any recomendations for one in particular....? I have had a look on the websites, but nothing really sticks out. Also thought I'd give him a Vit E / Selenium supplement as the grass around here is known to be deficient, and the symptoms for a deficiency is to be quiet/lack lustre....

Any more thoughts/ideas much appreciated! Thanks.

My old lady 24 is on D&H Veteran mix 1 scoop with 1/2 scoop hi fi and 1/2 scoop sugar beet twice a day Haylege add lib.

Why don't you try a higher calorie winergy feed like the condition or the growth? i have mine on medium and my friend thought she looked fab and spoke to them about her pony who is dead thin and has cushings, i cant remember which they suggested for him now, one of the 2, but anyway he is round and healthy and gleaming now

I feed my old mare (27 and fit/ active) spillers senior mix, they do two different types one weight gain and one matinence (my Tb has the latter). Very good complete feed as included probiotics (increases effectiveness off hind gut and increases food absorption) also has joint supplement included to. In the winter I add a little vegtable oil as its high calories but low volume (shes a very fussy eater)
Hope this helps

Alan and Page, Calm&Condition is good for older ones as it can be soaked, really good for putting weight on. From what I can gather you say he is a bit lathargic, you could try Propell plus or some Red Cell to give him a boost

My old tb mare is 29 and this year did not winter at all well, somebody on here reccomended Ready Mash extra, she loves it and has steadily gained weight whilst on it. Im so impressed with this feed its done wonders for my old girl.
Good luck keep us posted

my daughters 30 year old cob has calm and condition, highfi original, scoop of codlevine and garlic. she looks great after being skin and bone when we got her 8 weeks ago x

Our 22 year old cob was on 16+ but we changed him in the summer to spillers slow release energy as he was working up his fitness for a hunter trial and a bloodhound meet.

His workload dropped during the winter but we kept feeding the slow release.. but it sent him fizzy. So, we cut that out an he now has Alpha A and fibre nuts, and he is great on that.

You can see his ribs, but that is because he is so fit now ready for summer showing and dressage. His vet says he is 'race horse fit', and his trainer says he is in fantastic condition... full of muscle and shine..
