As in question, I used to pay a cheque, but nobody does cheques anymore, I would pay cash but the bill comes to quite a lot:rolleyes: Any other way?

I still pay by cheque. Could you ask for his bank details and do an online transfer? If he baulks at giving you his details, it's worth pointing out that the last x number of cheques you gave him have your bank account number and sort code on!

Does your farrier not accept cheques? Does he accept cards? If not, the only other way I can think of is that you set up a direct transfer from yours to his bank account. I pay my livery that way.

We all pay the farrier by cheque on our yard, and just leave them in the drawer for him to pick up. It's too risky leaving cash floating around.

Has he told you he won't accept cheques ? it could be becuase he gets charged to process a cheque and if it bounces he gets charged £25 I think it is.

I've he's told you then ask him how he'd like payment to be made other than cash

I pay by cash, as I do all my horse expenses if possible just so I know where I am up to and don't get tempted to over spend. My farrier lives at the yard so it's not like he's going to worry about carrying cash around!!;)

We pay by cheque, but my family have known our farrier since he was kid so when my gran's horse was barefoot and just being trimmed she used to pay him in vegetables from her garden :D

Maybe you could pay in kind?? lol
That's what I do :D

Cripes... it's clear you dont use MY farrier. Unless, of course your standards are pretty darn low LOL!!! :p

I pay my farrier by cheque. I guess if cheques officially become obsolete banks will make it easier for trades people to carry and use those portable card readers so their customers can pay using a debit card. I cannot imagine we'll all be expected to pay in cash or by bank transfer. It just wouldn't be feasible. And I don't suppose trades people are going to want to be forced to take and carry large sums of cash around with them on a daily basis.

My lawn mower repair man had a portable card machine in his van when he brought the mower back this week. Only a matter of time before the farrier does. Except of course when they're taking an arm and a leg.

PS paying in kind was NOT an option with our last one - grumpy, old .....

Cash or a cheque but only with clients he knows well.

Don't understand why you can't pay by cash? do you mean your farrier won't accept cash?

My farrier takes cheques, everyone pays him that way, at the end of the day he says he just does the paperwork then goes through the drive-thru and banks it.

Presumably drive-thru banking happens in the UK too? So easy, I rarely get out of the truck to do my banking anymore, love it:D

lol ive never seen any round me or even in the nearest city ( edinburgh) my own bank in town doesnt even have its own atm!!! so need i say i just pay by check :D

Haha when i read the title i thought oo naughty naughty haha (my filthy mind) I pay mine cash altho he keeps saying i could pay in kind i just blush and laugh it off hehe :) hes is super tho and does a great job xx

Bank transfer. My farrier said I was one of the first people to ask if he'd accept payment that way, but now quite a few of his clients do and I think he prefers it.

I wouldn't be too thrilled if anyone else paid him in kind mind you :D they usually give him a mixture of cash and cheques and most farriers have an admin assistant in the form of their OH to do the paperwork and banking;)

Cash, but then it's only £20 for a trim...I have left him a cheque if I've forgot to go to the cash machine and he's never said anything?
I thought banks were getting rid of cheque books because shops don't take cheques anymore or have i got that wrong?
Anyway, i wouldn't mind paying my farrier or his apprentice in kind...My farrier is fit, but also married to a stunning instructor that teaches a couple of people at the yard!!!
His apprentice is also very good looking, witty and sweet but far too young for me!!!

It's one of the things I'm going to miss now I've sold my horse, my 6 weekly hotty fix!!!

Banks make things easier??? Oh no you will have to pay MORE for them, as those machines will of course be easily dropped trodden on by a horse.

(Cost to buy a machine £450, set up a merchant account and fees of around £20-30/month + card charges of 3.5%)
