Which way do your stables face and do you find it ideal or a problem? Does anyone have stables that face one way (say north for example) but with a opening for the horse to look out of facing in a different direction?

South West facing - they were there when we bought the house 19 years ago. Personally I find it an ideal direction.

Seems to suit ours fine - nice and cool overnight and in the morning but get the sun in the afternoon/early evening. Sun hits until about an hour before sunset. Not an issue as mine live out in the summer and I don't ride until late after work.

Nope, no other openings for them to look out of but then when they're stabled it's dark anyway in the winter from 6pm to 6am!

Stable building faces south, altho it is a mini barn and so there is front big door to south and stable opening windows to west and east. Nice and light and sunny tho occasionally we get bad SW gales and then the front door and occasionally the western outside window has to be shut (has perspex window in it so horse can still see out) - we do get some very extreme weather. It doesn't get too hot as I can shut front door and it stays lovely and cool for when the horses come in.

Field shelter just put in, faces north, as there would be too much risk from the SW gales of it flying away, and they are mainly used for shade. there are also slats in the top of the rear (facing south) to allow wind to get through and not pick up the shelter, they are at the top of the back wall and about a foot long. Essential on top of a Cairngorm hill!

But we are in an extreme location!

I think my research at the time has them facing towards the EAST? as the northwind blows now behind them in the winter and also in summer if they need to escape sun and flies its out of the sun.(if that makes sense).I think I did read this when thinking of siting them.

Ours are an L shape facing south and east. They were sited before we bought the house but our wind comes off the Downs blowing north east so they are in the most sheltered 2 stables. They all have high vented windows at the back as well so that there is a breeze but off their backs, if that makes sense?

Mine face East. Pretty much perfect from a weather point of view - at least round here but you can't mix a feed after about 8pm unless you put the lights on!

Mine face south, it's an old stone barn and the stables are set back a good 4ft from the front, so in the summer it's lovely and cool and in the winter, the low sun shines into the stables and keeps them warm. The yard is always sunny, but we have a large ash tree for shade. It's pretty much ideal

Thanks so much everyone - this all very helpful. To be able to put up our stables in the garden they will have to face north (to do with the space and slope) and I was worried they may be too cold but am thinking of having a 'lookout' for each pony on the south facing side and shutting both the north facing doors when cold and windy.
