Which winter riding gloves would you recommend?

Wow, my hands are really suffering during my hacks at the moment! They're soooo cold! I'm using my usual riding gloves from summer. I want to treat myself to a lovely warm, preferably wind-proof & possibly even water-proof pair of winter riding gloves. I hate bulky gloves though so its important that they fit well & I can still feel the reins!!

Any recommendations?

I swear by Sealskinz gloves! They're incredible, I can't ride without mine in the winter. They're so warm and waterproof too (I regularly dunk hands into ice cold water wearing them). They have several different types, the warmest are the winter riding gloves but they probably won't appeal to you as they're quite bulky - I need to feel the reins when I ride my mare so recently invested in the "competition" riding gloves as they're still warm and waterproof without restricting your hands at all - they're also grippy which is handy! They're very expensive on the website though I'm sure you can get them cheaper elsewhere - I got mine from YHL for £35 (eBay may be worth a try?)
Alternatively I think their all weather riding gloves are a thinner material than the winter ones x

Oo they sound fantastic. I've had the every day Sealskinz before and they were great. It's so wonderful not having to worry about wet soggy gloves! I didn't realise they do riding gloves. The competition ones sound perfect! I'm going to treat myself thanks so much :-)

Agree on Sealskinz for warm and dry - but I find that I sometime manage to pull the inner layer out when I take them off - and I can't then get them back on properly. Just me? - or has someone found a fix for this?

Sealskinz.

To prevent you pulling the lining out on any glove:

- hold the fingertips on the glove as you begin pulling each finger out.
- buy them to be roomy, not snug
- if your fingers get sweaty/wet, lining more likely to stick.

I am so glad this issue with the lining of Sealskinz gloves has been raised. I was given
a pair of the ladies' winter riding gloves for a present a few weeks ago. The lining came loose the first time I took them off, and I could not get it straightened out. The shop agreed there must be a fault and changed them. I have ridden in the second pair half a dozen times, taking them off very carefully, gripping the top of each finger etc. Today the lining of one glove pulled right out. I am about to go and see if I can restore it.

Now, I love riding in these gloves. They keep my hands warm and I can get a good enough feel on the reins. The shop said they'd change them again if I am not satisfied. Given that my hands always are damp after riding in these gloves, should I ask for a larger size as a replacement (I currently have the snug-fitting Medium size) or should I give up and get a different make? I do think that the company have a design issue, though. They are expensive gloves and if you ride in them you need to be able to get them off quickly once you dismount. (Or are Sealskinz only for people who hand their horses to their groom..? :-) )

Agree - love sealskins and wear their socks all year but like you I just ruin the riding gloves by twisting the lining so I can't get them on any more. They are fab if you hands are 100% dry when you put them on but I can't do my bridle up with them on and by the time I have tacked up hands are usually a little damp

Well this definitely sounds like a major design flaw! How irritating! Especially when you're paying such a large amount for them! I think you should all contact them via their website as we need people to complain so that they change their design!

I've just looked at their site (& compared prices on others). The 'all weather' gloves are a tenner cheaper. Are they particularly bulky? Or am I better paying the extra for the 'competition' ones?

Many thanks,

Well, I failed to get the lining of the right-hand glove straightened out. It is weird, it is as though the holes for the ring and little finger have just closed up. So after 20 minutes of wiggling with talcum powder on my hand, I cannot get the damned glove on. I have just spoken to a lady at Sealskinz customer service and she says they have only had 9 returns of this type of glove in the last 6 months (one of which is my first pair.) She thinks perhaps the shop I'm going to has been sent a faulty batch. I am not convinced....she will be getting a 10th return pdq, and I'll be asking to shop to swop these Sealskinz for a more reliable make. I am annoyed at the waste of my time, and the fact that I won't have these nice warm gloves for riding in tomorrow. Sulk.

I've got a pair of shires neoprene ysrd gloves - seem good so far (had them for about a week:)). Only about £15 too

Sealskinz for me too. Haven't had any problems, but do always make sure my hands are dry before putting them on

But, I am a little bit careful with them. I don't do yard chores in them. I want them to have warm hands when riding. I use cheaper 'thermal' (ie £1 from village shop) for yard chores.
