So I really want to take my 5yo Connemara to the working hunter show at Summerhouse on 28th May, but I am unsure which classes he is suitable for.

This would be his first working hunter competition, he is a class 1 however he is over height at approximately 15.1hh and is jumping 90cm tracks happily at the moment.

I dont know whether I can do mountain and moorland classes or if i need to do the plaited classes etc!

The schedule is available here: http://www.npsarea12.co.uk/events/4570408733

Thanks :)

If he is over height for his breed then you can not do the M&M classes. You will need to go for the plaited classes. Check the ages on the classes as you could do the SHP class rather than the full Horse class.

Does he have a life height certificate?

You might get away with the M&M classes if he is registered class one and if they do measure there is some allowance (not a lot) at shows from excitement/shoes. I think you need a height certificate though saying he is normally under 148cm.

However in the rule book on breed standards (the NPS ones) it says over height Connies must not be shown in a M&M class. Therefore you can only do class 11 or 12 at the show :)

I do not think you are allowed to do the M&M specific classes as he is not to the breed standard required, he is well over height for his breed, you can do the training classes which are completely open and breed criteria is not required, you would be able to do these unplaited if you wanted, or plaited if preferred, you could do any of the classes from 9-12 but nothing else, it would be a good opportunity to get him in the ring and see what the judge thinks of him.
It may be worth really checking how big he really is as often when measured properly, with shoes off in a relaxed place, they will drop a fair bit and 148 cms is a little over 14.2.

You should come to Ireland to get a pony measured in, you certainly learn a lot of tricks to get them in! Not all barbaric before I get jumped on lol ;) I know a pony who is 152cm normally and has a life height cert at 147cm!! :p

On his passport he was measured as 148, but he is now standing at approx 15.1 with shoes on. Is that what you mean as a height certificate?

Also, can he do class 4 ? As it says its for ponies over 143cms?

His passport height is not a height certificate, you need one done by the jmb, link below if you decide to go that route, it may not be worth it if he does not get under 148cm, you need to get it right first time as they are stuck with whatever they get, they need to be done for a life height certificate once they have finished growing so yours is unlikely to be under.

He cannot do class 4 as he does not meet breed standards, there is no height limit on Welsh Ds which is why there is no limit on the class, all other breeds have a height limit to meet the standards set by the breed societies.

He can't do any native classes unless you're breaking the rules. Class 9-12 you can enter.
Natives don't normally need JMB height cert unless going to HOYs/RIHS and they can be measured smaller in subsequent years if they're growing- ours was 147.2 at 5 and somehow measured at 146.7 at 7 for his final one!

You can do classes 9 to 12 and you should plait!

As an over height Connie he cannot do m&m classes but often over height Connies make top class show hunter ponies and plaited workers.
