Hi guys,

Just wondering which wormer you use for your dogs? 8yo Border Collie, very active and out and abouty but doesn't tend to eat too much when out other than the occasional snack of grass.

TIA.

Milbemax monthly to cover all worms plus lungworm. Your vet will know whether your dog is at risk of lungworm in your area. If no lungworm risk, Drontal Plus or Milbemax every three months. My dogs hate pour on stuff like Advocate. External parasites are taken care of with Seresto collars. None of them are collies or collie crosses. You can have your dog tested for MDR1. Border collie people will be along soon to help I am sure.

MDR1 has quite a low prevalence in border collies but I'd be reluctant to use in in any susceptible breed without testing and then making sure the dose is very accurate if in a lungworm area. I have a MDR1 dog (smooth collie) who's wormed with drontal (no cases of lungworm locally) but drontal makes Quarrie vomit so he does have milbemax. for fleas they have advantage as and when needed-the cats are done monthly though.

MDR1 susceptible dogs include Australian shepherds, smooth and rough collies, shelties, OES and GSDs but its been found in other herding breeds, non herding breeds and collie crosses. If you've not had your collie tested also beware them eating cow/sheep/horse faeces.Vets are still woefully uninformed about it!

Am I best to go with my vets advice then instead of OTC?

yes although I don't think you can buy anything over the counter containing ivermectin/equivalent and if buying OTC make sure its actually a wormer and not some useless compound. Its worth asking them about lungworm in your area too while you're at it. Once you know where you're at with drugs etc you can save money at the likes of Hyperdrug etc.

Great, thanks, I wasn't sure. My Mum used to deal with worming and just let me know how much I was due her, now I've moved out and taken Mahra with me it's all on me.

Something with milbemycin in monthly then, unless you’re in a rare lung worm free zone. Obviously being a presumably untested for mdr collie you want to be careful, I doubt you’ll save much going OTC than from vets.

Mdr1 tests can be done for about £40 for peace of mind.

We use drontal (cos they eat them without argument!), and periodically wormcount for lungworm. Had a positive result once and advocate cleared it.

I use milbemax twice a year once they are adults, I don't use any pour ons except prinovox, maybe once a summer on the adults. More often on pups.
