I don’t completely trust the advisor at the feed merchants, I just want more knowledge before discussing this winters wormer.

So, they had Equimax last year and have had clear worm tests since then - lots of grass to rotate and sheep who go on the paddock after the horses have grazed it.

What would you be using?

I would be doing a FEC as a starting point and a saliva test. Depending on those results I would use an ivermectin based wormer such as eqvalan or eqvalan duo if tapeworm detected. Then I would worm for encysted red worm with equest at the end of January/beginning of February as we've had such a mild autumn this year it's still a little early.

If they have low worm counts and a low tapeworm/equisal test count then I wouldn't be using anything until I did equest in late Dec
Agree, if fec’s are good they one to be thinking about now Is tape worm. An equisal test will tell you if this is required or not.
Then wait til later on to give Equest to deal with any encysted reds which don’t show up in the tests.

I'm doing equisal tests next week when the dentist is out. If negative then Equest all round because it looks like frosts imminent.

If positive then one can tolerate Pramox, one can't and the other is new to me. So a bit of planning required.

When I had one that couldn’t tolorate pramox so used to use Equimax for the tapes and Equest later on for the reds. Worked well and costs much the same!

I think that will be my plan for all of them if she's positive. I hope not but I bought fields which had a tapeworm riddled pony in them so ?
I’ll be honest I don’t equisal test. Since moving where we are I can guarantee they will need doing this time of year but will be ok in Spring. Apparently they use mites as a host and our area is rife over summer so I assume that’s why. Very annoying!
