While I'm on the subject of feeding - a Q for a good supplement.

I have a ID currently in full work (ridden 6 days a week) mixture of schooling/hacking and light unaff competing.

He’s doing pretty well at the mo on 24/7 grazing, a couple sections of hay in the morning in the field and one meal a day consisting of 1 x scoop of alpha a molasses free, 1 x cup of linseed, scoop of garlic and some magnesium. My grazing isn’t brilliant and wonder whether he’d benefit from a good vitamin/min supplement or balancer in his feed. Any advice?

If you don't need any weight gain but want to be sure he's getting everything he needs, I would probably suggest a low calorie balancer - Topspec lite or Baileys LoCal for example. I personally use Topspec lite for both of my ponies, but if they need any extra condition I will switch to the Comprehensive balancer which has much higher levels of protein so promotes a bit more weight gain.

Thanks DW - no, no weight gain is needed, just want to ensure he's getting all he might need.

Another vote for Top Spec. I've used it for years. Much better than Blue Chip. I did try Equilibria but he wouldn't eat it. I am using Lite at the moment as my horse is a good doer and has a bit of other hard feed (I give half the recommended amount). He looks great, if a little porky...

Personally seeing that your on quite a good diet, in regards to keeping out cheap fillers which a horse really don't need in their diet I would use equimins advance complete, its linseed based and much higher spec then topspec plus without the oatfeed, molasses and other cheap fillers

I would use a basic broad spectrum supplement 365 complete is probally what I would choose in this situation .

Thank you both, yes am keen to stay away from "filler" type feeds and keep any molasses out of his dinner. I will take a look at both of your suggestions.

The advantage of a pellet balancer over powder supplement is the protein content. This is great if all you are feeding is balancer and chaff for a good doer, but if you are feeding a 'feed' as well then the extra calories aren't necessary.

Regarding fillers, every single supplement has them - the pure elements of the supplements would taste VILE and no horse would eat them. A pelleted balancer isn't 'full of fillers' where a powder is not. However the balancer is higher calorie, as it is designed to be completely balanced including proteins where a powder is not.

I've taken a look at the nutritional content of the Equimins Advance Concentrate Complete Pellets and the 365 complete and Equimins looks like it comes out top with higher quantities of most ingredients.

Personally I would cut the garlic out and use a well known supplement like equivite http://www.sprcentre.com/Online-Sho...rpose-Horse-Supplements/Equivite-Original-3kg
