Does anyone think I would be able to cure my whippet x (rescued from gypsies who used her for rabbiting and stuff) of grabbing the other dogs round the back of the neck when they are running and playing. She's not aggressive, but the other two (lab and little whippet) hate it, and it's getting to the point where they won't run because of it. OH says to get her a basket muzzle and it will break the habit, but at 4 years old, I'm not sure it will. SHe knows its naughty and will stop if you shout 'No' at her, but it seems like all I do is shout all the time now! I'm also worried that a muzzle will traumatise her cos she's quite sensitive......

what about the age old trick of squirting her with water when she does it? didnt work to teach my dog anything as he loved water but hey you never know lol. or keep her on a long lead and when she does it give her a tug and walk off in the other direction.

You have a lurcher who has worked and she thinks it is a very good game to play rough. My sister had a large lurcher who was the same. My whippets refused to play with her because she played too rough. There is nothing much you can do about it. You will have to keep her on the lead while the others have a bit of a game on their own.

Now I have 1 whippet who plays rough runner and the others won't run properly with her. I have had her since she was 11 weeks old, it is just hard wired into some of them.

At least it means they won't all go off hunting.

I have to say my whippets used to do the same to my mums cavaliers, even though they had never been taught to hunt (they were show dogs!)

I used to muzzle them both to try and prevent damage being done, they werent bothered at all once they had got used to it - I had lovely lightweight wire muzzles, so they could pant/drink/eat grass through them on walks

TBH I doubt you would be able to change the behaviour now, so maybe as someone else has suggested use a flexi-lead??

Try a muzzle, you need a cage shaped one (the Baskerville is the one we sell the most of, they're about £8 I think).

I doubt it will bother her too much once she's used to it, and at least she will still have freedom to run around. The world would end for my whippet if you stopped him running!

My younger whippet does this. Many younger ones do it but most grown out of it. Unfortunately, although nearly 2 now, mine just doesn't seem to be getting the message.

Like you, it is getting to the point where my older dog won't run and play anymore if the little one is out and about as she will just grab her neck and spin her round. I also believe that the disc prolapse my older dog suffered 6 months ago was caused by the rough dog spinning her round while she was in flight.

Only thing I do is to make sure that the older dog comes out to the fields with me a couple of times a day WITHOUT the younger one (I leave her tied up in tack room). She is much more playful then.

It drives me balistic tho, I hate it especially as the older dog is more fragile now since her accident. If anyone knows of anything to stop it I would be grateful. Muzzling wouldn't work as the younger one also broadsides my other whippet, as well as biting her neck. Shouting only acts temporarily as she knows full well she is out of reach of any further discipline methods.
