I had whippets before - now have greyhounds - but I would 200% recommend whippets

They are fab hot water bottles, gorgeous looking, easy to look after, very sweet etc etc etc

Dont forget to post pics when you get one

And like Cala said, do think of a rescue one, I have two rescue greyhounds and they fit into my routine so easily

I grew up with an absolute dislike of wippets after I saw one assaulting my labrador girl (ok he was mating with her after breaking into our garden but I was only 5 and I thought the look on our dog's face was not happiness!)

Worst part was my mum had her spayed after that so no puppies anyway.
I like them now, but could not have one as they just look so fragile!! They are very cute looking though

I have a whippet and a lurcher. I'd recommend them!!! I will never have any other type of dog, it's long dogs all the way!!!

Brilliant pets, loving, slightly insane, great fun and hilarious at times, but love nothiing more than to crash out on the sofa!

Brilliant dogs, they are generally quiet, they are also clean and don't like to get covered in mud. They love to be with you and will walk for miles. Then they just sleep all day long. They are not fragile, they are real tough nuts, I used to race and course with mine, they shrug off any injuries and when you watch a whippet carrying a huge rabbit it has caught for you, you realise how powerful they are. They don't eat much and they have no hereditary breed defects, so they keep healthy, the only draw back, a proper whippet likes to hunt and they have such fine coats and thin skin, they can rip themselves on wire or thorns.

ooooh, i'm liking the sound of these dogs then. they are so cute too! i currently have a very elderly golden retriever that has kidney problems so i'm sort of planning new dogs already (i know thats really horrible but i can't help myself)- won't actually buy anything til my old dog has been PTS tho (and i'm hoping he has a while left yet)
i'd have another retriever tomorrow but i feel that my house is a bit small for a giant puppy and my boyfriend is sick of all of the hair all over the place!!
right off to look at pictures of cute little baby dogs!

I used to joke that I gave my vet my wage packet and he gave me back what was left at the end of the month.....only it wasn't a joke

Love mine loads, only downside is the chase reflex - other dog owners sometimes think your whippet is being aggressive when they are trying to play, or in the case of mine he will chase deer at any opportunity, and then become selectively deaf!

Can I hijack the thread and ask a question to all whippey owners?
Are they heavy shedders?
Only they seem lovely dogs and would concider one but I'm a wee bit allergic, I can cope with a wee bit of shedding but not too much.

They hardly shed their coat at all
smile.gif

They are brilliant dogs, although mine don't really live up to the stereotype- they are both bonkers and hardly ever sleep, but they are still puppies I guess so will let them off
tongue.gif
They also love mud, don't wear coats (never shiver like they are known to!), they are tough cookies!

Gorgeous animals though, and get compliments all the time
laugh.gif

They are so friendly, I have never known such kind natured dogs, although mine do tend to lick you to death
laugh.gif
They are hilarious, have such funny personalities, make us laugh every evening doing something stupid

whippets for me...i have two...they are alot tougher than people think...my two are bold, we go out in all weathers...one of mine loves to swim

if your thinking of getting one for a pet only maybe go for the showing breed line as the working/coursing bred ones can be more have a higher prey drive

they dontt have much road sence and if they see anything what moves they are likely to chase

they are very loveable and always love somewhere to snuggle up..and one is never enough..but some can be distructable and will chew anything(but cant any dog/puppy)

i suffered will allergies and this is one of the reson why we decided on whippets, only moult slightly and very clean

go on and get one...there are so many alitters at the moment or try the JR Whippet Rescue
good luck
