we are thinking of getting a couple of dogs in the spring having lost our beloved staffie. We don't want big dogs so were thinking of a couple of terriers. However a few people have put us off saying they will go off ratting together up the stables.
we were wondering about a whippet or Italian greyhound but know nothing of the characteristics of the breed.
There seem to be a lot of whipppet enthusiasts on here, so what are they like? Are they easy to train and good with other dogs?

Mine are stupidly over friendly, they crave for human attention- got two of them from the same litter which we were told was a bad idea, but they have been brilliant together, they keep each other entertained but still love human affection.

Easy to train, although we haven't tried any "tricks", although they sit, come to call and heel (and they are only 8 months

), and they fetch too but don't really bring it back

They are perfect pets, but remember they are thin skinned and delicate so I wouldn't recommend them for young children who may be rough with them. They also wouldn't suit a life with no exercise (well mine don't anyway)- we have to take them for a long walk 3 times a day to keep them quiet!

Lovely dogs ( I have one, so am biased!) they only negative I've found is the chase reflex. We have a lot of deer near us, and my dog spends most of his time looking for them, or ignoring me and chasing them. Hence walkies aren't much fun unless you I'm very on the ball!

I have nine whippets, they are very loyal, lots of fun and have lovely temperments.Once you had one you end up getting another!!They are a all purpose dog,a loving pet, race and show. They come in a range of colours, brindles, blacks, blues, fawns, partis and a combination of what i,ve said.If you do decide to have one or two,go to a good breeder and don't be afraid to ask alot of questions, any good breeder will do the same.Don't always fall for the first litter you see.

Whippets are great dogs - I have 2 - and a lurcher and a labrador - they love everyone, they are loyal loving pets and are quite undemanding - they are clean, they rarely smell and are reasonably easy to train
Her's my lot:

yes whippets are great i have two and wouldnt do without them ...i race and course mine...very allrounder dogs...pet /show/work/race/course/agility oh and sleep
But they are born to run and chase(well most of them) and some from working/coursing lines may have more of a high prey drive and will chase and hunt all the time...some may have alot more staminia and will go on all day...do as much reserch as possible in which breed you choose...try the whippet forum and k9 forums...on ther are some IG breeders ...i would not recommend a IG unless you know the breed
Talk to as many owners/breeders as possible and then decide

good luck

Hi Cala,
Your brindle looks remarkably like mine! Who's the father?!
Mine's a complete "male model" very handsome but no brains lol.
Mine plays with my Staffie and gives as good as he gets..he even yodels running down the stairs!!
I do agree with another poster...they do run off if you're not careful and will even bolt back to some strange smelly food that they passed 20 minutes ago so you have to be on the ball!!!
