Can someone tel me the pros and cons of these lovely dogs having kept terriers all my life! Am thinking of getting one in the not too distant future. I have 2 kids (one is a baby) so temperament is key. Thanks for any tips you can offer!!

I have a little fawn whippet called Mindy and she is the most wonderful dog I have ever had. She is no wimp and loves our Rotti they made a wonderful pair. When I first let her off the lead she went running across a field and I heard a big yelp and she had landed in a deep ditch, not seeing it because of the speed. Since that occasion I am very careful where I let her off and make sure she has wide open spaces to run. I love her dearly and could give no faults, other than they can be a little accident prone as above.

FAB, full of character, loving , funny, cheeky, affectionate and love cuddling in ,they love their comfort and curling up with another dog, they are heat seekers, so love the duvet/heat blanket, take as much exercise as you can give or as litle as u can spare, and love their sleep, they are thin skinned though, so can be easily hurt/maimed, they would not appreciate kids climbing all over them and are more likely to leap out of the way, esp the smaller built ones(so supervision and kiddie respect for the dog a must.
an be a little over selous when playing with toys and grab them at the speed of light, which could end up in a lost finger tip

I have and always will have whippeys

I actually prefer a cross of a whippet x greyhound, but these came in to our rescue, so they got to stay, but I do have a 16 year old whippey x grey

Thanks all and Cala your dogs look gorgeous!! Luckily my kids are pretty well trained having been brought up with dogs..all breeds need respect and shouldn't be taken for granted. Whippets sound perhaps a bit buzzier than my border terrier but he has his moments. Just another question - some seem a lot smaller than others - are there different varieties or are the bigger ones crosses?

Got 3 of them, all great with children and very chilled, always have been, well apart from when we used to go racing and they were a bit hyper then.
They are all geriatric now and like to sleep for at least 20 hours per day, preferably in a heap next to the radiator or in the sunshine, they love to sunbathe.
As for sizing, racing bred dogs are smaller than the show bred dogs, mainly due to the handicapping in racing, where they go back 1 yard per 1lb in their weight groups. All 3 of mine are racing bred and are very outgoing and bold, also fairly easy to train, they sometimes do go off on their own, but usually to circle back to you.

They are practically perfect in every way

They are quiet house dogs, love to be warm and snuggled up - preferably under the duvet or on the sofa. they won't settle on a hard floor!

Outside they are very tough and love to run and run. They are typical sighthounds so their recall isn't the best especially if they have seen a rabbit/squirrel/deer etc but they are devoted little dogs who love their owner and will come back once the adrelanine wears off.

They are sensitive and don't need tough love at all. They will steal any food that isn't nailed down. They need wrappin up in winter to go out.

Some of the finer coated lines are prone to skin tears (especially if hunting through hedgerows) so good insurance is a must.
