So when im riding Hilde in the RS when i need to give her a tap on her bum to wake her up and back up my leg aid she more often then not throws in a buck! What does this mean? Isit because she doesnt like it?? Or is she just being difficult and wants to rebel?? This is actually quite dangerous because when the lunge whip got cracked (NOT ON HER!!! LOL) she bolted off with me and did 2 HUGE bucks to which i fell off and the second and couldnt even walk after i had to have 2 people holding me up! It was quite bad could hardly walk a week after was still getting painful twinges and taking pills for it! So really dont need that happening again!! LOL!
Sorry for rambling but any help of waking her up in another way and the questions above would be muchly appreciated!!!
Thanks xx

i HATE it wen riding school instructors crack the lunge whip at ponies....

sounds to me like the little mare may have had a bad experience with a whip at some point in her life? is she generally well behaved in other aspects? i only ask because i once had a horse who had been treated abominably by a previous owner, and any movement, stroke or sound of a whip would cause him to bolt in panic.

as to how to wake her up without a stick......not sure!

in my experience, most RS ponies are so conditioned to their jobs and having various riders, they go into an 'auto' mode. i once went for lessons at Talland, and i rode a little cob there who i couldnt even get into a trot, let alone canter! and there was me: "iv just passed my C+ test, studying for B test now......."

The whip should be used behind the leg to back up leg aids in a quick tap-tap movement. Ie a double smack-smack.
Dont use it on the 1/4s if it's general forward motion you want.

Shes a naughty pony lol T_T !!!
Tia shes a RS, i just ride her every week because nobody else likes her (because shes so naughty!! and now ive fell off they dont want to!) in my lesson! And i love her hehe!

The thing with these little horses, particularly mares, is that they know their job and they don't like people telling them what to do. I have a couple of trail mares and they are exactly the same. Leave them to it and they will perform their job absolutely perfectly - interfere with them or tell them to do something that they don't think it correct, and they will react!

One of my mares will grind her teeth, curl up her lip and put her ears flat back, if someone tries to tell her to be different from what she knows is right LOL!! Interestingly though, she is perfect with me and will do whatever I ask of her. She makes me chuckle a lot and I have a real soft-spot for her.

There are probably two reasons one reason may be you used your whip a little too far back rather than behind your leg, another may just be she is sick of being told what to do. I have never heard of an instructor actually cracking a lunge whip! arnt you just supposed to basically "swish" it (not sure how to explain properly!)

Tia sounds exactly the same! but im not scared of her and i wil make her do what i tel her to and she doenst like it

!! Makes me giggle! But because people know what she can do they dont tel her what to do they let her walk all over her!! Yeah i have a soft spot for hilde! Stil not worked out why because shes such a b*tch!!! LOL!

I'd wager that if you were the only one to ride her and to take her off exploring that she would stop doing all this nonsense - at least that's what I find with my little mare. You like her because she is quirky and she has a mind of her own....at least that's why I like my little mare.

Lungeing whips aren't supposed to be 'cracked', and riding instructors should never chase horses with it (unless they are on the lunge, obviously).
When I taught, if a client was p***ing me off, I used to sting their thigh with the whip (while they were on the horse - I'm a good aim) and pretend it was an accident, that I'd been aiming at the horse...sorry if it was any of you guys

I dont think you should need to "crack" a lunge whip at anything! I only have to gently flick (miles behind) one of mine when lungeing to make him perk up. If I actually cracked it then Im sure he would go nuts too!

Maybe the pony is simply bored to death. What do you do in your lessons? Perhaps asking for something more fun to do might wake her up naturally?

H used to be at a riding school and is the same. If you use a short whip where you need to remove the hand from the reins he will buck. if you use a dressage/long whip he is fine unless you use it in canter.

She didnt chase me with the whip! And she didnt mean it to crack it wacked off the fence and cracked on that if you get me! Thats interesting G_W i shal have to try her with one shouldnt i!

You need to be sure when you use the whip that you allowing the horse to go forward with your hands, even if it is a little faster that you might have anticipated. If you don't allow that the only way is up.

Does she understand why she's being hit? You need to make sure she associates being smacked with not going forward, so that she is only being hit if she ignored your leg aid. Otherwise she will just be confused and think she gets hit randomly.

You can buy really cool lunge whips over here which are guaranteed to crack even if the muppet at the end of it isn't competent at cracking whips.

I'm intrigued. What other parts of your body can you click with that you needed to specify 'a vocal click' ?
