Why are you not allowed whips at BD and RC champs. Can you imagine show jumpers being told 'no whips in foxhunter final'
You can wear spurs so why no whips.
Yesterday at the RC dressage to music champs they took your whip from you before you went into the international arena and with 2 tables with judges sitting to ride past a tap to say concentrate would have been useful .
We have always dropped the whip before the entry but they wouldn't allow this yesterday.
My daughter who can remember tests very easily went and got lost in her own freestyle test and missed out 2 compulsory movements and ended up riding a couple of extra bits. She was furious with herself and wanted to retire but got through it and came 4th.Amazing seeing the mess she made.

For the life of me I can't understand why you can't carry a whip in a BE test either,
perhaps this rule was invented in the early days when mostly fizzy Tb's needed careful riding, but our horse knows full well his rider has no whip and plays on it!
Last week my daughter did several un-aff tests and boy did he get a shock when she rode in with a schooling whip..
I think it's a silly rule and one which should quietly disappear, perhaps we should all write to the relevant authorities in the hope they have a re-think?
ps well done to your daughter for coping after a rattling like that, it must have upset her to deviate from the normal routine..

She had a bit of a strop actually but it was because she felt she let everyone down. We've all been there and on the other forum everyone was very kind but I thought she should learn to loose as well as win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ooops!

Yes, it's tough when you've done consistantly very well and you lose a class that you feel was there for the taking but sh*t happens and we're all human!
As HH says, she did really well to keep her head and at least finish.

I totally agree with you over the whip rule.
It seems ridiculous that you can qualify with one then not be allowed one in the Champs., although please don't let them say 'no whips altogether' though!

For the RC not to let you even carry it until the bell goes is just too much though!
Aren't we old enough to be responsible for dropping it before the start? Tbh, I've always found them a bit jobsworthy., don't even get me started on the 'flu vacs!

Try doing the Junior Section with no whip or spurs. Oscar Beatle's pony was crap and came 8th, the winner we had same score as us at the PC champs so we new Oscar was as good, waste of time going cus he does not go forward with out holding a whip (we don't ride in spurs) but saying all that the people, the event and how it was run was very good and we enjoyed it

I think if more people moan at RC HQ then they may look in to it.

Carthorse - Tell Clare I have only just check my answer machine messages and will send my Mobile number to her.

tbh I have never seen the point of whips in dressage? I would think the judge would look unfavourably on their use and even on bob the lazy one did a test without a stick, warmed up with it but by then he was going off my leg..

Ah but I don't have to use it just carry it, as soon as I drop it Patrick knows and will back off my leg. In an ideal world it shouldn't make a difference but this is Patrick!

Ah well, you need to know the history to see that the rule is really that they are permitted in non championship classes.

Back in the dark ages - whips were not allowed at all in dressage, just as per current eventing rules. It seems that the old style horsemen had this strange idea that a horse should respond to a light leg aid and not need a whip.

However, some years back pressure was brought to permit whips, and the concession was made for ordinary classes - but not championships, as the horse should be listening and responsive by that stage.

So, if riders are having issues with their horses when required to ride without a whip, clearly the ruling needs to be revised so that they get used to getting the horse off the leg without one

Oh - and before we go down the "but you're allowed spurs" route - spurs are a tool for refining your aid. They are not the equivalent of the volume knob on your radio, to make your aids "louder", but more akin to the fine tuning knob that allows you to get the best possible reception.

Just to add another thing about whips... I wish they would bring back the maximum length rule, my horse does not appreciate one bit being ridden in the warm up with other people flicking him with their's because they are incapable of riding with them properly and insist they have to stick out at right angles.
Sorry, rant over!

Now you see I know that but I don't think Patrick listened to that bit in his schooling!

But sadly in Junior RC champs you can't have spurs either so if you have a posh forward going bit sharpe horse you are ok but fat kids ponies like our Highland cross goes no where without a whip.

So at Riding Club don't lots of grassroots kids compete and not many have the forward going type horse, three of our friends kids had the same problem at the weekend cus no whip or spurs.

Saying all the yes they should go forward off the leg and well school etc but not all little fat ponies are and when they do the area's there alound a whip so go well then go to the champs and come away feeling what if I'd had a whip etc Bah bah bah

Anyway off my soap box and the answer is buy a new pony

(which we have and this one is forward going) teeteetee

I don't think children should be allowed spurs either...at home the ones under around 15 using them aren't able/mature enough to!
Yes, if they're in dressage they should go forward, even little fat ponies, been there and I really strongly feel they shouldnt be allowed in dressage at any level.
If the horse won't go without whip/spurs, I accpet some can take the P but it's basic schooling gone wrong imo.
