Just ignore it. Could be local council road mending info or kids fooling around. The stuff about plaits in manes has been investigated by BHS and has been proven to be rubbish. This probably falls in the same category.

Depends on where the mark has been made and what markings it has within the circle...... if on a wall/gatepost then possibly.

With the amount of horses out there going for meat, if I were a gypsy, I wouldn't bother with stealing a horse. Much too much trouble to bother with.

Anyway, I still think accusing gypsies is rather racist.

its far more likely to be hashers or whatever they call themselves in your area - we get them all the time, they are probably markers for a cross country run.

thank you didnt think of cross country run, fingers crossed its that. wouldnt be the concil as on a private lane and was with chalk i could rub it off with my foot there is spray paint. not being racist about the gypsys, like with everyone in the world there are good an bad, but the person who told me is good friends with them, and told me about the different marks, he is going to get some info today

That's what I thought and OP I hope in your case it is these - we have harriers or hashers whatever they're called come along the bridleway and they leave lots of these huge circles of chalk in usually white but also other colours and with arrows or other symbols at gates or junctions - I think some as real trails and some as false ones. They set a false one once which almost sent them through the yard once but thankfully someone spotted them and sent them on the correct path as 40 runners or so would have caused mayhem!

I'm always a bit confused why people think, in this day and age of camera phones and picture messaging, why any prospective thief would mark out the place they intended to steal from with big white chalk marks, or the horse they intended to steal with nice fat plaits... kind of spoils the surprise, don't you think?
