(i'm v v bored at work sorry) Obviously not going to wash my poor boy in this weather but just thinking ahead. What is the best whitening shampoo and any ideas how to keep them white for longer? My boy has long white socks (to knees & hocks) with a bit of feather (section d) and never really come white not matter how much i shampoo and elbow grease! I don't like to wash him too much as he lives out 24/7 all year but he does also have mild sweet itch and feels much better after a good wash, but it would be nice to have white legs once in a while! The hardest part is the heel kind of area. I'll wash them one day and the next they are almost as bad again! I tried putting mane and tail conditioner as it's supposed to stop the dirt sticking so much but didn't really work!

Also, when he's wearing rugs all winter (off in the day so long as it is warm) he gets terrible dandruff! He's in really good condition and doesn't have flacky skin or anything but just seems to be dusty and dandruffy when i take his rug off and can't get it out even with the flicker brush. Obviously dont want to wash him and wash out all the grease that protecting him but it drives me mad every year!

Any ideas??

There is a lady at a yard near to me who brings her horse in each night and washes and shampoo's his legs! Unbelievable!

There is a horse at my yard who gets very dandruffy and flaky in winter and his owner was told by her instructor that its because he was wearing too many rugs and was getting too hot. This year his mum has been ruthless about the weight of rug he wears (much less than usual) and he hasnt been flaky

Maybe give that a try?

Merlin was looking decidedly dusty and greasy until i kept putting a clean under rug on each week. It is a silky one which 'grabs' the grease and keeps it off his coat. I wash it once a week and put it a new one on and now you could see your face in his coat (and I rarely groom at mo)

Sounds interesting but don't think it's that, he only wheres a medium weight rug when it goes below about 2 deg! and a rain sheet if it's wet and below about 6-7. plus he doesn't get much of a coat and gets the shivers he he is wet, i have tried leaving him unrugged as much as poss for a couple of seasons but like i said he gets the shivers!

I have only washed him twice this year due to the crap summer so maybe thats it. Plus haveing rugs off in the day he comes in plastered in mud so prob doesn't help!

I have a Sec D with Medium amount of feather and 4 white legs. I have found that the best way to get the grease and grime out of white legs is Fairy Liquid. crazy thought i know, but it dissolves grease. Give it a really good scrub right down through the hair and you will have sparkling white legs. I do tend to use a good condition after the Fairy liquid to add so moisture back in. I always get comments about my boy's legs at shows

Sounds good Kbstaff, we used to use wasing p liquid on the ponies when i was a kid, but stopped as didt thnk it was any good for there coats! I'll have to give it try when it warms up then if it's ok to use, thanks!

I do think if you use it too much, it can dry their skin out like it does our hands, that's why I use a conditioner afterwards.
Good luck! I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
