OK, Horlicks has white line disease

. Only found out today, as I was asking girl who looks after yard she is on why she had those strange shaped shoes etc, and she was saying she has white line disease, and they are struggling to get rid of it!
Now firstly, she is not lame with it, which is a good thing and she has this very strong hoof oil on, which I believe to have Iodine or something mixed in it to help the growth of the feet, would Ketarex be a good thing

. Plus she is on a foot supplement.

Does any one have a horse or had a horse with this? What did you do? Any tricks of the trade? Remember she is an RS horse, so money is very tight, but anything I can do to help that won't cost me the earth? Farrier said to remove shoes, but this is not an option as she will be come foot sore and foot sore = out of work = not earning money = no good to RS..... actually, that could be my way into buying her.... LOL!!!

WLD is the same as seedy toe, just wider spread throughout the white line. Best bet is to not let the feet get water logged, keep the areas exposed to air, and the iodine is a good treatment.
 
get some eucalyptus oil and brush it well in, also brush on soles of feet it hardens them off, brilliant stuff and cheap!!!! worked wonders on my horse

The way I have been successful in dealing with this is to clean out the cavity/crack with hydrogen peroxide. This gets oxygen to the anaerobic greeblies and kills them. Then I pack the cavity/crack with vaseline that I have previously melted and stirred copper sulphate into, then allowed it to harden again. This seems to work well and the cavity/crack is gradually cut out as the hoof is trimmed. A good mustang roll helps a lot as well.

Formaeldahyde or formalin! it really is the cheapest way. it is generally sold in agri stores in 25L drums but if you have a dairy farm near you they will most likely have some. for cattle it is diluted but i just brush it on inside of hooves neat, and on hoof wall to just above nail holes. you have to be etremely careful and do not do it inside...outdoors with loads of air is best as it is dangerous to humans. my farrier reccommended it to me as the cheapest way to sort white line disease. it had results within a week and really strengthens hooves
 
the only thing that worked with mine was Backtakill 55 (or spelt something like that!) i tried the hydrogen peroxide, different oils, keretex stuff etc.
If the Backtakill 55 didnt work i was told to then try formaeldahyde.
 
alyth, you,r solution sounds good, the bacterial infection is most likely a result of nail holes at the quarters or damage at the toe clip. i would clean out all necrotic tissue with a dremil or similar. copper or zinc sulphate mixed into a thick paste is a good job, i,m not sure about the vaseline as it might seal out the air, as you know these infections , thrush, fungus etc dont like air. there should be no question of shoeing the horse, untill all of this grows out. if this problem gets worse there wont be any choice but to deshoe etc. if i was the horse i would limp like hell so sombody will take notice
 
Absolutely agree that no shoes is the way to go (sorry!) until it's cleared up. Have shoes removed, soak feet in a 50/50 solution of Milton steralising fluid and water, for ten minutes per foot, 3 times a week. That way the hoof absorbs the fluid up into the laminae which is where the bacteria lurks, and the steralising fluid kills it off. Simply won't work with a shod hoof.
 
Do NOT use hoof putty, and I wouldn't use vaseline either. They may have active ingredients but the priority is getting air to the infected area.
 
Please be very careful when using formaeldahyde. Usually this can only be bought under licence. Formaeldahyde is to be banned shortly and will be replaced by a different product due to how dangerous it can be to be humans.
