One of my horses was shod yesterday. We had noticed his feet were quite broken up. Farrier mention white line disease, saying his feet break up around the nails holes. He said we need to disinfect it. However didnt tell us what to use.

So could it be something to do with the ground? (hes been out alot recently)
What causes it?
Also whats the best way to treat it.

Farrier said he just see what his feet were like next time!

Thanks

sounds like some kind of softening/ bacterial infection.
You can clean them with Hibiscrub, some recommend bleach (peroxide rather than the stuff you chuck down the loo), I find eucalyptus oil to be effective

Thanks fot the info. How often do i treat them with something?
Also just to add another horses feet on the yard are similar (but not as bad) and she lives out alot too.

Where do i buy Backtakill 55 from?

Had exactly the same thing last night with one of mine. Is also called seedy toe (I think). Farrier said Cornucrescine do stuff for it, about £7 a bottle, horse disinfectant. He wasn't sure of the proper name, but I would think any tack shop would know what it was. He suggested Hibiscrub as well, which I already have.

Horse has never had anything like this before. Farrier said can be caused by damp conditions. He cut a V shape in the wall of the hoof to open it up to the air and didn't seem too concerned about it. Horse not lame at all, but just keep an eye on it. He's back in two weeks and will look at it then.

you can buy it here - http://www.homesteadfarmsupplies.co.uk/bactakill-500ml-p-189.html
I think you spray it once, then do it again after 10 days - its quite strong. theres instructions on the bottle.

my horse has recently had an abcess burst out of the back of his foot - can you still use all this stuff if there are still signs of an opening from abcess??

My horse has just been diagnosed with seedy toe, the only thing that kills it apparently is life data hoof disinfectant.
It's not cheap but it works.

miltons works too

i clean out all teh crumbly stuff, squirt with a syringfull of 2 milton tablets in 500 ml water, soak animal lintex in the miltons and pack the hole with the soaked animal lintex
repeat daily until there is no more crumbly stuff being produced (the crumbly stuff is what the bacteria/fungal infection does to the hoof). then i do it twice a week

this assumes that you've got a hole you can pack the animal lintex into

this has been the quickest and easiet way i've found of dealing with WLD
