I've just read ycbm's thread on white line disease and using Red Horse stuff. I'm fairly certain my young mare has WLD - black thready bits between wall and sole and a nasty abscess recently. I've not dealt with this before so need a plan of action - do I need to pare back the black bits? What Red Horse stuff is best and where do you buy it from? There are some places where she has a shallow hole (where the abscess was found and a couple of other smaller one) but mostly at the moment there is nowhere to plug. She had the vet for the abscess but they didn't comment on anything else about her feet (other than that the were exceptionally hard to dig into).
I'm particularly frustrated because I have no idea why she has this. I've had her for 6 years, all that time she has been barefoot and had a mineral mix to match her forage. She's had no hoof problems before. Her feet look fantastic - no flare, lovely concavity, healthy frogs, great digital cushion etc. When I scrape though in places it's as if the white line has moved slightly back towards the centre of the hoof as opposed to the wall flaring out. Her feet aren't long though - her heels are quite low. I am trying to get my instructor/trimmer to come and have a look but she has been off the scene during lockdown so any help in the meantime would be appreciated!
