Would agree with daisychain, unless you were there and saw the poo as soon as it came out of the horse then it's more than likely that flies had laid eggs. I had a massive panic about this too once. Try and catch him/her having a poo and 'dissect' the poo to see if they are there before the flies get there!

If that was the case, would it not be normal to see maggotty things in droppings??? I have never seen any in merlins, or the others in the field.... only the ginger [****] flies hatching out of very old ones!!

Send either a maggot thing or some good photos to Chris Dolby of Abbey Diagnostics, and she will identify it for you.

My mares poo has white eggs laid in within minutes of being done......I know, cos they are still warm......but it isnt worms as I have checked ones straight from her!!
I havent ever seen them as maggots....I assume they have flown away before I pick it up!

Absolutely - I am really intrigued by this thread TBH - we don't even have maggots in the poo picking dump that I have ever seen!!!

O.K. Everyone Sorry It's taken so long to reply Bloody computer crashed when I'd posted only just been able to get back on.

So I rang my friend again and it turns out that the horse she has bought is being kept at the same place it was when she bought it and looks like they haven't pooh picked (for a while) so yes sounds now like they are fly maggots (which take ten days to hatch) friend not happy as we pooh pick every day. I've a feeling said horse will not be staying there very long. Thank you all again. I thought it seemed odd but I've never found anything in my horse's pooh same as MQ. So trying to identify something quickly for my friend and I couldn't find anything on the internet with pics. So I thought of all of you

Better than any other site for info. I'm trying to get friend to join so she can ask if there's anything although have warned her very addictive.

I find them all the time in poo too! I seems to be worse with the wet summers we've been having! One lady at my yard had a massive panic last year when she found one on her horse's frog whilst picking his feet out, can only assume that he had stood in some poo though as farrier had been out the day before and his feet were fine then.

OK I am back from my poo analysis - NO WORMS OR MAGGOTS other than earth worms - how bizarre is that, the poo we looked through (got a 13 year old to help me LOL) was up to 2 weeks old in the poo pile!
