Advice please-
I've just clipped my bay horse and noticed he has developed white spots, mainly on his neck but some on his body aswell. they are about the size of a 1p piece and flat. He hasnt had an injury as i know scars can come back as white hair. I'm wondering if they are old midgy bites from the summer!!?
Any suggestions? thanks

They sound like 'birdcatcher spots'. They are common in solid colour horses of Arabic and TB decent. They are harmless and can come and go as the horse gets older.

They first started appearing on my chestnut arab around the age of 15. I was concerned they were indicative of liver damage so asked my vet on a routine visit. He didn't know what they were but was sure they were merely asthetic. Since then - thank to forums, I have learnt what they are

He has had many come and go over the last few years - even in his tail. He was almost skewbald at one point

I have known one gelding bought as an eleven year old solid bay which then 'coloured out' as a snowflake appaloosa and was then registered as such because it also had other appaloosa characteristics, i.e. striped hooves, white sclera, etc.

Could they be vitiligo like Zara Phillips' Toytown has? It's a skin disease which is harmless but patches of skin lose their pigment.
