I am at a complete loss on this one, so thought I'd see if anyone else had experienced something similar. I bought a saddle in July 2009 for my new little loan mare, who went lame six weeks later, so the saddle went for a nice long holiday! It was fairly old, but in good condition and I cleaned it every week while she was being ridden, and every other week while she was off work (I am a bit funny about tack cleaning).
Then she was PTS in April last year and since then the saddle has been sitting in my dining room. It gets cleaned about once a month to keep the leather supple, but I have noticed tiny pinprick white spots on the leather which will NOT come off. They won't clean off, they won't come off with white spirit, they won't scrape off, and I don't seem able to cover them up with anything (shoe polish, pen, crayon....). Obviously, I cannot do anything too drastic to get rid of them because I don't want to destroy my saddle, but I doubt anyone would want to buy it covered in white spots!
Has anyone ever come across this? How do I get the spots off? If I can't get the spots off, do you think anyone would buy it cheaply, as a training saddle, perhaps? Its quite old, but its in pretty good condition, except for the stupid spots, of course!
