White Wash or White Paint?

I'd use masonry paint too - goes on easily and is water based to easy to clean up. Gives better coverage than whitewash.

I just get value white paint from b&q, then water it down a little so it gets in the cracks and bumps easily.

You can do that but if it's plaim emulsion there's a limit to how often you can wash the walls down if you need to. Masonry paint is washable (and you can water it down a bit too!)

Yep we use white masonary paint for the top and black bitumous (sp) paint for the bottom. The stables get jet washed and painted every year, but the house...well not so often.
