Whitening grey horses tails?

Has anyone any tips? I have yet to come across anything that works on my mares slightly yellow tail. I have been using chalk just before i go into the ring but its not the easy thing to do without getting covered in the stuff.

I tend to let my horse's tail grow really long before a show, wash it, then lop the yellow ends off... works a treat as long as you don't show too often

If you don't fancy ending up with a three inch long tail by the end of the summer - some sort of clothes whitening product is supposed to work on tails... can't remember which one though sorry!

This is going to sound a bit odd. Really, really cheap shampoo from somewhere like Morrisons. It works!

forget all of the above! warm bucket of water with a scoop of washing powder in... dunk tail, swish around, rinse et voila

Lots of people recommend bleach....but eventually the tail gets a blue tint, and one day a friends horses tail just sort of fell off...
Dirty Beastie works a treat, then putting chalk flakes in the final wash

if you use washing powder use a non bio with a blue tinted powder because those blue bits replaced good old blue bag (showing my age) Daz use to be good.
then i would rinse it and then dunk it in a buket of water with net curtain whitener in it (liquid version comes in sachets from tesco). you leave that in it. but you wont really see difference til its dry but it is dead good stufff.

Quicksilver purple shampoo. If horse is grey not white then purple spray in final rinse watre. Test first by sticking your hand in and if your cuticles get a purple tinge then dilute some more! Lilac tail not attractive! I wash tail every 3 days to minimise yellowing!

I swear by Artero whitening bath, i can leave my grey for 6months and she will come out without a hint of yellow! Its for dogs i use it to get my dog WHITE before crufts, highly concentrated and need to wear gloves or you'll have purple hands for days! Google it, its amazing and gentle on the coat i leave on for 10mins and your white!

Sterident!!! 8 sterident tablets dissolved in boiling water then topped up with cold, dunk tail in (don't let the dock go in the water) and let it soak for a couple of minutes, then use a really good shampoo for grey (I use champion tails silver highlights hampoos, its really good, thick and purple!) then give it a very good rinse.

Ahhh....shes a mare! Therefore has seasons and pees in it.

I reccomend a TAIL BAG!

My mare has a white tail. Process of keeping it white involves regular washing, Napisan, QuikSilver and conditioner.

Hot hot water, and a liberal amount of Napisan. Dunk tail but not dock. Swish around. If water goes a manky colour, repeat.

Rinse.

QuikSilver. I leave it on while I wash legs.

Rinse.

Conditioner, left for as long as poss.

Rinse, comb, plait and put in tail bag until next week.

And in its bag...

I ride/lunge/turnout/stable with it in the bag, just take it off for lessons, jumping and washing it.
