Still fuming and this happened hours ago!! Walking Yellow Dog today I met a bloke with a greyhound and a boxerish type dog - both were off the leads so I carried on as normal. About twenty meters away the owner starts shouting at me to keep my dog away as his are dangerous. Called him away and but the boxerish dog launched - luckily the owner caught his collar but let go of the lead the greyhound was on who then went straight for us. Yellow Dog scarpered and it went for me! I booted it and the owner caught the lead and apologised.

I asked why it wasn't muzzled and the owner said it was cruel... He then explained that both dogs have to be crated at home as theyre aggressive with each other and his children. The boxerish one is a boxer x staffie that was given to him by a friend who couldnt handle it - he's attacked both this guys kids and put his wife in hospital (took a chunk out of her leg) and if he puts it on a lead it goes for him. The greyhound was ok with his wife until her baby bump started showing then it attacked her belly putting her in hospital again.

I was totally speechless when he said this then asked if he'd had anyone in to help train as he was clearly out of his depth and he said he'd had two people in - both said the greyhound could be ok if he rehomed her to a knowledgable home but recommended the boxer x was PTS as he clearly has issues.

All I could think of was WTF as I was walking off. This man is obv putting his family in danger - they've got two kids and another one on teh way. I understand that he loves the dogs but surely his family has to come first? So angry!!!

I think being attacked by a dog in a public place is something the Police would take action on - in which case if you wanted to involve them then contact them on their non-emergency number.

I didn't think of them :o Spoke to my dad who is going to speak to his friend who is a local police officer :) The dog didn't actually get me tho. Got the owners details from the neighbour - it would seem he isnt v popular round here...

So he's walking 2 dogs off lead, unmuzzled that will go for just about anybody for no reason? He won't muzzle because he feels it's cruel and he can't put them on a lead as they then attack him?!! Good grief!!

To my limited knowledge his actions are against the law (and def dangerous!) as he's not in control of his dogs (clearly) and you only have to feel threatened by a dog to report it.

I'd call the police and the dog warden! This is a case that's def going to end in disaster!!!

If you do call the police then I would mention what was said about the children in the house as that is a child welfare issue - disaster waiting to happen :(

He put teh greyhound on a lead when we got closer but they were both off the lead until then. I'll wait til my dad has spoken to his friend, feel a bit guilty because I'm fairly sure if it gets taken further that the boxer x with probably be pts but I'm still shocked that this guy can have these dogs and have kids

Under the dangerous dogs act 1991

The dogs must be keep out control at all times when in a public area.

If you have the details of this man I would report it to the police on their non emergency number. This is an accident waiting to happen.

It should have been under control though and not run up to you to the point you felt threatened and had to shove it away (and your dog had scarper!) He should have put it on the lead as soon as he saw you. If he can't get them on a lead quickly enough, they shouldn't be off.

I can understand you'd feel guilty of the consequences, but this man is clearly out of control and irresponsible. Someone's dog is going to be hurt/killed and worse probably a human or child. I think realistically it's better to report than the consequences.

I'm fairly sure if it gets taken further that the boxer x with probably be pts

I thought exactly that when i read your original post....but it is better that then a child getting attacked :( sadly some dogs are beyond redemption

Defo phone the cops. Although they can't do much unless the dog was deliberately set on you, they will take this seriously. I'm gobsmacked that this bloke would keep dogs like that near his kids!
