I have a horse that I think we are going to have to have put to sleep, I'd prefer bullet to injection, but I don't know who to contact to have this done. New experience for me. Any estimates of costing would be appreciated too. Thank you

i'm vry sorry to here this and i dont know who you can call perhaps a vet could suggest? out of interest why would you prefer bullet to injection?

Give your local hunt a call; they're the best people for the job. Completely understand you choosing the bullet over an injection - I would never have a horse injected, for I have known so many go wrong. I would want the quickest end possible, and the gun is the best for that.

Good luck; so sorry for your situation

SP, a vet will do it either by injection or bullet.

We had two horses pts by bullet - it was very fast, but while the first experience was very peaceful, the second was not so nice.

We paid rough roughly around £100, but then there are disposal costs on top of that.

Really sorry, and I hope it all goes as well as can be expected under the circumstances. x

Thankyou everyone for info and sympathy, its really kind. I would prefer a bullet because as mizelz said it quick, and I dont want him fighting the injection. He's not in his right mind and wouldnt stand still for an injection anyway, would cause so much more stress for him
Sorry to be dim but I have a number for the hunt secretary.. is it them I call? Never got round to hunting him so not sure of the correct person to call. Thankyou

Sorry to hear about your horrible situation.

John Funnell of Cherrytree pet crematorium is fantastic. The vet put ours to sleep but he was there and did the rest and did everything possible to make it easier on us. I believe he does actually put them to sleep as well. He advertises in Horse and Hound but pm me if you would like his number.

Snow_Pony sorry to hear this.

I should have thought that the Hunt Secretary would be a good person to call as they will be able to put you in touch with exactly the right person. Hopefully they should also be sympathetic. AFAIK if the hunt do it they will make a one off charge of around 85 - 100 and there won't be any other disposal costs if they take him away.

So sorry to hear you are facing this. All I can say is that I have had 4 PTS in 30 years of horse-ownership and it isn't as bad as you expect it to be. Two were PTS by humane killer by the knackerman, and the other 2 were PTS by the vet by injection and then the knackerman took them away. I used the knackerman as I work for a farm animal vet and know him personally through the practice - he does it all the time and is very professional and compassionate in his approach. The 2 that were PTS by lethal injection went swiftly and quietly, but neither of them were in the least bit bothered by vets/injections etc. My previous horse hated the vet which is why he was shot. At the end of the day, you know your horse and what is best for him. Your vet will be able to recommend the best person for the job.

I am so sorry to read your post.
I had my old boy pts a few months ago.
My vet came out, gave him a quick injection to sedate him, and then the proper injection - it was all very peaceful.
For the vet and removal it was about £140.

My thoughts are with you.
