Who do you listen to?????

I think a second opinion sounds like a good idea - from another saddler and maybe another physio too.

Check it yourself. Put the saddle on with the points of the tree behind the shoulder blades, check by feel and sight. Girth it up. get someone to stand the horse square while you stand back and look. Then feel the horse for the last rib, the saddle mustnt go beyond it. If youre not sure, post a photo on here!

What do you think? Does it go beyond the last rib?

TBH while it depended on the situation I'd probably be inclined to believe the physio if I had to pick one. The saddler might well be defending themself against an accusation that they sold you a saddle which didn't fit whereas the physio hasn't got anything to prove.

Well, I do think its too long now!
The Physio says its about 3 inches too long and will make his kidneys sore! :0(
The saddler says theres no way she would make a mistake like that.
On the other hand, my horse is a sensitive little thing and I reckon he'd probably have bucked me off by now if he really was that uncomfortable.
Think Ill get a second opinion aswell.

how far back does the saddle come?

have they both seen the saddle on the horse recently?

can they both tell you where they think the saddle should end and why it is wrong/correct where it is?

Oh man, what a day!!!!!!!

Ok, Ill keep it short......My physio says my saddle is too long for my horse, but saddler says it isnt!!! Confused???? I am!!!

Back person!

Been there bought the T shirt, if not get a second opinion from another saddle fitter, either way if there is a problem with your horses back and your back person recons its caused by the saddle, I'd go with what they are telling you and get another saddle.

My physio saw it yesterday and my saddler is coming out next week to look at it.
Having felt his ribs, I do think it comes beyond his last rib, but to be honest, I cant really feel it too clearly!!!

Are we talking about Archie? TBH, he's not backward about letting you know if something is bothering him, is he, so if he seems comfortable, its probably OK.

I would get the chalk out, if it were me. Find Arch's last rib, and chalk over it, so you can see clearly where the line is. Then, chalk round the saddle and see if the back of the saddle crosses the line of the last rib. Its a lot easier to see when they are clearly marked in chalk.

Three inches???? How on earth will you get a saddle thats three inches shorter? Or is that just me being dumb (it could well be.....)

Wait and see what the saddler says and go from there. TBH I should think it would look to long if it was 3 inches too long.

If you can't feel the rib very easily a good way to check (although it may not be totally accurate) is look for where the hair changes direction, usually the that is the area where its located, so if the back of the saddle comes beyond the line of that area then it may be too big, its only a rough guide though.

Here's a pic to help show the last rib. Trick is to follow it back up and round to where it joins the spine, not just directly upwards!
