I'm broken at the moment after a very silly fall from a pony two weeks ago.

I landed on my right shoulder, heard a crack and couldn't move it. The connections felt wrong, very wrong. After calling my aunt and uncle to rescue me and sort out the pony I went to hospital and have a surgical neck fracture of the humerus, which means i have broken the ball bit at the top off the arm bone near the shoulder bone. Plus associated muscle and ligament damage.

Luckily no op needed (so far). Just physio and a sling. I don't have a prognosis though - too scared to ask. Itching to ride again though so that's an incentive to get better asap!

So, who else is broken and how are you coping?

How did you do it?

What have you done?

And, how are you healing?

Thought it might be nice to have a forum chat so we can update on progress and alleviate the boredom of being stuck at home!
<(")

Poor you, that sounds very nasty.

I'm mended now :D Not trying to rub it in but to let you know that you do get there eventually! I broke my ankle at the start of July so have spent the majority of the summer stuck in the house :( The highlight of one week was going to the petrol station with OH as it was the only time I got outdoors. I'm back riding again now thank goodness and am just trying to build up the strength in the ankle again.

You'll get there soon. Just remember that your Physio is your best friend, even when he wins with 2 submissions in one half hour session :D

Im not broken but after my 10th day working on the trot i feel i may be soon, had a nasty elbow break 2 years ago so if i dont get at least one day off a week i start to hurt like buggery, wrist is playing up in said arm at the mo, and shoulder, i also woke up with a strong need to vomit at 3.30 thismorning, i am presuming this is because i am having to take painkillers to sleep through the night, so bloody tired aswell!!!

Hope you get better soon :)

Probably not very helpful, but I broke my leg/ankle in June (very silly fall too), I had to have surgery, so I now have a nice collection of plates and pins in my left leg (very disapointed when I didn't go off in the airport scanner)! Physio has really helped, took one of my horses to a comp last month and won! So I'm getting there! It will be over soon enough, but when you fianlly get the OK from the doctors and physio it feels great, it certainly makes you realise how much you take for granted!

Good luck & I hope you heel quicky!

I'm always broken, chronic fatigue syndrome leaving me open to bug going.

Have to laugh it off, my OH's favourite saying is that its my brain that's broken... oh no wait, I'd have to have one for that lol :)

I'm broken too!

Had a nasty fall at work 6 weeks ago today, off a 3yr old that I had backed before going on holiday and got back on for the 1st time. I spent 3 weeks working with him before getting back on, all went smoothly, long reining, bit of lunging in full tack and stirrups, leaning over etc... (this is after he'd been backed and sat on approx 10 times before his month off due to my holiday). I also was mindful to not do too much, didn't want to be getting on a fit 3yr old ISH.
I leant over, all fine, he happy and relaxed. Big pats, good boy. I told the girl holding him what I was doing and got on lightly. Again, all good, relaxed, plenty of praise. Took approx 4 steps forward in the menage and I say "just be careful, sometimes he jumps forwards a bit when my legs touch his sides..." to the v experienced girl leading him.
My legs didn't touch his sides, but suddenly he just lost it. I am known for my sticky bum, I don't come off easily. The only way I can describe what he was doing is spinning fly bucks. Leaping high, head down, hand stands, whist spinning.Girl got knocked down, rope burns from lunge line. I clung on for what seemed like ages, mangaged to grab hold of the bit each side to try and pull head up, didn't work. He didn't stop until I finally fell, at 1 point I thought I was landing on my feet, unfortunately not.
I landed on my back, didn't move, pain indescribable! Lots of gas and air and morphine later, finally on spinal board on way to hospital.

I have broken my back, L1. Very lucky, no damage to functions, nerves etc, although they were quite concerned at first. Could have been a whole lot worse.
2 weeks spent flat on back in hospital, now stuck at home in a back brace, waiting to get better. The pain has been awful. Nerve pain in the spine is excrutiating and paralysing, and visited me everytime I woke up after a little snooze for a few weeks. Thank god that has settled down now. Was averaging 2 hrs sleep a night if I was lucky.
Just managed to wean myself off from morphine this week, the withdrawal symptoms have been a b****.
Am going back to hospital next week for first check up, really hoping it's good news. At least not in bad pain now and getting some (fitful) sleep.

Am hoping to get back to work after xmas, not with horses though. Am going to keep on riding and competing my horse eventually but I can't face working with them again.

Am going to make a full recovery, very grateful of that. It's been tough though. Than god for my OH and family, would be truly stuck without them.

OP, I hope your injury heals well and the prognosis turns out to be good. I am going to be around for the forseeable future, so if you want someone to moan to, I'm here!
I'm the same as you, itching to get back on,esp after watching the WEG, all inspired to work on my mare and progress!

Can't wait to be better!

ETA: sorry for the long ramble!

Kirstie that sounds horrendeous what you have been through! Hope you get good news. MrsM has been in a back brace so she would be a good person to give you lots of helpful advice..... oh and hot chocolate!!

Healing vibes to you all!!

I've been broken since 10 August (there was a posting around that time for all of us who were broken on here somewhere?) Broke my tibia jumping. Knew I was about to do an unscheduled dismount so tried to land on my feet, my right leg took the blow and felt it snap. I have fractured the tibia up through the ankle joint (distal pilon fx) so damage cartilage too. Had a plate, screws and pins fitted 17 Aug. Was non weight bearing for 6 weeks and been trying to walk on crutches for past 3 weeks. Its very hard to walk!! Something you never actually thought about and took for granted is now very hard to do and takes some thinking about to do it!! lol!!

I hope to be driving my car and riding my horse within the next 4 weeks if all goes well but only time will tell how long its going to take to build up strength again.

Hope you all get well soon!! xx

Wow - my break pales into insignificance! I hope you guys heal well, can't imagine how painful a back or leg break must be.

Thanks for all the advice from those who have recovered. I'm def pro physio as they have helped me and my dad immensely in the past. Started my exercises on weds this week and i think they are helping already re strength and mobility.

Tennessee - is CFS the same as ME? if it is hang on in there because it can get better. I've known three people who have suffered with it and they are so much better now and all have more good days than bad.

It's good to hear people have recovered well from broken bones. I can't wait to get out again - homes under the hammer is driving me mental, seems like it is on every channel.

Good luck to all recoverees!

Kirstie, hugs to you, sounds awfull, hope your check up goes well, dont give up on going back to work with the neds, i know it seems like it will never happen again but time does heal the head!

Sian Eliza, ME and CFS are one and the same, its ****. I had it for 5 years and you can get better.

Tennessee, as above, i know it is **** when you have it and some days are really hard to get through but there is light at the end of the tunnel

Hugs to all you in pain people:)

I am very much broken, but repairing slowly!!!
I broke my back in February in a horrific accident, had rods and pins in my back, 4 months later Dr discovered I had also broken the head off my shin bone, but because I had been laying on the bed for all of that time, it had mended itself so left it!
So, after 15 weeks in a back brace, and months on crutches, I am now walking with no aids, we have a new pony, and the recovery is going really well.
And lots of it is down to the love and support I got from everyone on here. xx

I broke my leg and ankle falling off 7 weeks ago - got my second appointment next week since leaving hospital - fingers crossed for good news that I am healed enough that appointment is made to remove 2 screws that need to come out. And after that starting walking again

X rays if anyone is interested!

Allover & SianEliza - Thanks for the kind words about CFS, when I was diagnosed I was told it is slightly different to ME in the 'proving' department ie it doesn't show up the same in tests as ME does. Don't know if this is true, its been a while and I guess there may have been more research done. I have to say though, it was brought on by a viral infection when I was 14. I am now 32 :( Yep I have good days and they are better then they used to be, but 18 years lol I have to be awkward!!!!

To everyone else with those horrific sounding injuries - omg, my heart goes out to you ALL, and I hope you all heal nice and soon.

Why do we do it??????? :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Katd66 How did you get pictures of your xrays? I want a copy of mine!! lol!! I didn't even get to see my xray till my 6 wk appointment with the consultant! Is the first one a CT scan? I had a CT scan before the operation as that what made them realise it was a pilon spiral fracture.

I had very similar to you but the fracture spirals up through the joint surface and round the back of the tibia to the other side, right leg. Fibula intact thankfully. I had an xray at my 6 wk check up and you couldn't even see the fracture line so was told could start partial weight bearing and build up to full weight bearing. Hopefully you'll have good news too. :D Got everything crossed for you!

I have found the site www.MyBrokenLeg.com really helpfull for advice and tips etc to get the leg working again once you start to use it. Actually walking on it, even as partial weight bearing, has been the most painful time as all the soft tissue, muscles and nerves scream out at having to start working again!!:eek:

I got given a dvd of the surgeon repairing 3/4 inch tear in ligament across front of shoulder, putting metal pin in bone and pinning the muscle that goes from neck to the shoulder back onto it and then cleaning up all the muscle that got shredded in the three months it took them to decide there was something wrong-only think is it won't run on my mac!

Yes! it is a ct scan - i asked for them at the hospital at my 3 week appointment - had to fill in a form and give them £15 and they gave me all the x rays and scans I had had on a cd (about 20 images in total)! Well worth it I think!

It will be 7 weeks next week and still no weight bearing until the 2 screws that go through both fibula and tibia come out (they are acting as ligaments as mine were damaged) When I had my cast changed I could feel already how weak (and very painful!) my ankle was but perhaps it is because I also dislocated my ankle so the muscles etc were 'bruised'! just looking forward to getting going again!

Thanks for the website - looks very useful! I have kept wiggling my toes and slight foot/ankle movement in the cast which the nurse told me to do which isnt too bad.

Thanks for the encouragement!

I feel a bit of fraud.

Broke my back at L2 on the 30th July.

Third part of a grid. I knew I was coming off on the second part. I wasn't very well and in my wonky state, I decided to try and land on my feet - only when I was coming off I was about ten feet in the air . Compression facture form landing on my feet :(. Span round as I still had hold of her mane, went flying backwards. Bottom of my BP dug into my lower back. That hurt. Lots. The break dind't hurt though, still doesn't; it's the muscles around the break that cause the angst and ouch now.

Back brace came off just over a week ago :D. Was very strange without it! Physio starts next Thursday :D

Can't ride 'till February :(

Hi KATD66, wow your xray is exactley the same as mine , I done my break 5 years ago now on a nutty cob, unfortunatly I got post trauma arthritis which really plays me up in cold wet weather so this winter will be fun. I find them flexi stirrups a god send they really help if you out hacking for few hours. I still compete jumping but am a bit more careful these days not as dearing as i was lol but am glad i got bk on :)

Nope Mrs M you broke something, so no fraud.

I might be the fraud, maybe I just have chronic laziness lol :D :D :D :D :D :D

I don't have the pain that everyone else has/had , other than the muscles, which is starting to fade off. Things just get niggly now . I should have taken six weeks off, but needs must so I kept working . Client has been incredibly understanding and I've worked from home for most of it, lying on my sofa bed :)

Ouch! Hope you heal nice and quick. I had a broken arm last summer, that was due to a car accident though. Right now my back is giving me serious grief, did some gardening last weekend and been in agony since, it seems to hurt where my horse kicked my in my coccyx last year, perhaps the gardening and the cold got to it.

I'm Broken :( Not as bad as some of you! I hope you all recover quickly!

I've had a knee op to fix cartilidge and a ligament thing. I am hobbling on crutches. No riding or driving for 8 weeks :(

I am having horse withdrawls. My friend comes round in her horse gear and the smell is great!

Photo-Jo- OMG!! You got the video of your operation!? I can't bare to look at my scars never mind watch the operation! I'd be quite pleased the dvd doesn't work!

Katd66 - I shall be asking my consultant for copies of everything then at my next appointment on 8 Nov!
Hopefully your screws can come out next time. Taking the hardware out is much quicker and less traumatic as going in! If I don't get any problems mine will be staying in but I don't have the screws across both bones. I was in a walker boot (ROM walker cast) from weeks 2 to 6 which kept my leg fixed but allowed me to move the ankle up and down whilst in the boot. This was good for the cartilage surface health where damaged and also meant less rehab time after as ROM is already started when cast off. Although having ROM to start with didn't help in the walking stages! I haven't damaged any ligaments in the fall but they have constricted so I am now trying to stretch them. You will have the further complication of strengthening your stretched damaged ligaments. Wish you all the best in healing. Get reading www.MyBrokenLeg.com its a big help reading everyone elses storys and give you an idea what to expect.

Samual - I'm also at risk of getting traumatic arthritis. Did you break your ankle through the joint surface of the tibia? I'm so scared of what lies ahead with regards to arthritis and my consultant did mention further operations etc and possibility of joint replacement or fusion. I have just ordered some cetyl myristoleate tablets as been recommended for TA of joints to help so I'm going to start it now rather than when pain starts! Its worth a try for you too.

Big healing vibes for you all!! ((((())))

Yup! I'm broken too. I had an op to 'fix' my dodgy ankle which was damaged in a fall 4 yrs ago. Was one of those lovely NHS no your ankle isnt broken - 3 wks later still in unbearable pain - oops it is actually fractured afterall! However as it had already started healing on its own they left it. Its been problematic ever since, I have always managed to ride fairly normally with it Iv just had to take painkillers after Iv done alot etc. Last yr it had just kept getting worse so they did an MRI scan which showed up traumatic/osteoarthritis, ligament damage and various incomplete stress fractures throughout my ankle. Cue the op ordered, which unfortunately took slightly more than the 12 wks from last august that they said it would - 10 months later they operated to take bone out and scrape it etc. However 4 months on I still cannot walk without the aid of 1 crutch as I cant yet put my foot flat on the ground again, so I still cant drive or ride either. :( Was getting alot of pain after the op which I didnt get before and when I saw the consultant 6wks post op he said it wasnt a good sign and that I could then need another op to stabilise the ligaments around about it but I was to get physio first before they would make that decision. Started physio once a fortnight in mid august but altho it has improved its not a lot,. She said shes limited to what she can do because I cent get my foot flat so its basically a 10-15minute manipulation and stretch and then see u later. She also says that because my ankle now hasnt worked properly for the last 4 yrs she doesnt think it will again. Its almost like a complete blockage over the front of my ankle when I try to move it or bend it - it just basically doesnt move. This scares me quite a bit tho that I wont get proper movement back in it and am starting to really stress about it. Im back at the consultant in 10 days and I'll just need to wait and see what he says now. I will no doubt get a lecture or be told Im at it because Im still using the crutch but I really and genuinely dont feel safe without it, partly due to lack of balance and strength in my foot/ankle esp with me only walking on ball of foot and also when I get the severe pains in my ankle it actually gives way sometimes, its not nice.
My 2 lovely horses in this time hav been practically abandoned and I feel so bad particularly for my young one as hes 5 but so green for his age as he wasnt backed until this time last year then had most of winter off and was start/stop at beginning of year - I just think hes going to be wasted because hes not getting a proper education still. :(
Anyway, in a way its made me feel a little better reading all your posts tonight, if only to make me realise that im not the only one in this horrible situation which I was starting to feel that I was as all my friends around me are out competing and having fun and Im the only one not, its very hard., Apologies for the huge novel and rant this has turned into and I promise I dont whinge normally tho this post makes it sound like I must be the worlds worst - honest Im not usually like this!!
Hugs and good healing vibes to all the injured and lets hope we will all be back riding as soon as we can be. :) xx

Me me me (oh so bored me) may I join in!

I too am a very lucky girl, I have a burst T12 (spinal fracture with two fractured processors) and a broken ankle with pins :( I have my x rays, CT scan and over 400+ MRI images too if anyone's interested?! I've found them all very fascinating but then I would its my bones :) , especially the MRI, I never really fully appreciated the science behind it all.

I took a tumble from my horse last month at a HT and landed on my feet, the impact was met by my spine and ankle! So officially now bored and varying levels of insanity having been 'locked' indoors for a month. First 9 days were spent lying flat on my back (no pillow!) in the hospital, not knowing the extent of the damage...they were very soul searching days. Now I have a back brace, cast, crutches and laptop to entertain me.

Looks like I’m not the only one in the wars!! I’m going to try and respond where I can…there are so many broken ones!

Ouch! Bless you SianEliza. Sounds like a real crunch. Great post we can all share the pain and frustrations!

oooooh Allover, I feel your pain, I also broke same ankle (different bone) 2 years ago and was still feeling the pain at nightime, who knows what it'll do now.

very disappointed when I didn't go off in the airport scanner)! Physio has really helped, took one of my horses to a comp last month and won!
Gutted for you!! I thought the scanners would have picked up lumps of metal, is there any plan to have them removed? Well done on your recent success!

Tennessee - You poor thing, my sister had CFS for years, are you on any programme for gradual exercise? If it helps to know she recovered and is now a Farmer's wife! Crazy girl!

I'm broken too!

I have broken my back, L1. Very lucky, no damage to functions, nerves etc, although they were quite concerned at first. Could have been a whole lot worse...

Am going to make a full recovery, very grateful of that. It's been tough though. Than god for my OH and family, would be truly stuck without them...

ETA: sorry for the long ramble!

Kirstie, I think rambling is an untold side effect of broken backs! Mine started as I lay on the field. I was off on one telling the kind people the ambulance was going the long way round and should have taken the back drive, only I live where the HT took place.

It sounds like we have similar injuries, let me know if you want a cyber hug anytime.

Broke my tibia jumping. Knew I was about to do an unscheduled dismount so tried to land on my feet, my right leg took the blow and felt it snap. I have fractured the tibia up through the ankle joint (distal pilon fx) so damage cartilage too. Had a plate, screws and pins fitted 17 Aug.

Landing on your feet can be just as nasty, trust me it can break your spine!

KattD - Your x rays tell the story very well. I have just two screws in the tip of my tibia, whereas you are going to rattle :)

I am very much broken, but repairing slowly!!!

Benson it sounds horrendous, hope you're recovery progresses well and you enjoy the new pony. x

And finally, Mrs M you are so not a fraud! You just must be made of hot chocolate not to feel the pain!! :)

Good luck everyone, sorry if I've missed anyone, I shall be around alot on HHO too until Christmas so if anyone needs a cyber hug let me know, it's a pretty emotional time and helps to talk to others in similar situations, not just the pain elements but the way it just changes your whole outlook on life xx

Sitting back and reading all posts under this thread... I have come to the conclusion we are all MAD!!! Why do we do this to ourselves?? Some of the injuries you guys have are just nuts!!!

I got kicked in the side of my chest by a yearling about 6 months ago.. lacerated my spleen and broke 3 ribs.. got airlifted to hospital and spent a week in ICU.
Ribs still hurt bloody things!!

But jesus.. some of these injuries.. if someone non horsey was reading they'd recommend we were psych evaluated i reckon!!!

I'm broken too!

I fell off my horse at somerford park in the SJ phase of the novice class and my horse stood on the back of my knee. I got checked out my the paramedics and doctor on site who said I had pulled a muscle or twisted it and was fine to carry on :-O

My knee ballooned to about 4 times the size within around half and hour and I couldn't move or put any weight on it at all. I ended up going to A&E the next day just to be on the safe side. They took one look at it and said I needed it X-rayed. I had to go back the next day for an MRI scan and turns out I have fractured my tibial plateau in my left leg. I had it operated on after 10 days because the swelling needed to go down as apparently my knee was full of blood...nice.

Had a spinal rather an a GA and they went in with a camera first so I got to watch on a big flat screen TV. The surgeon showed me the damaged area and explained that it wasn't as bad as they first though so wouldn't need to be plated just 2 screws.

Had to stay in hospital for 2 days. It wasn't too bad apart from the first night when, after the spinal wore off I was in agony so they gave me morphine which stopped it hurting but made sick. Had a femeral splint made, which I have been wearing for the last 7 weeks. But no walking, driving and definately no riding :-( my horse has had a 8-9 week holiday so far and looks like an over grown exmoor pony. Going back to hospital a week on tues to see the surgeon and have more x-rays taken and see if I can start walking again! yay

Get well soon to all you other lame people on enforced box rest like me!!!

Hi Maizy!
Sorry to hear you're very broken too!!!!! Hope you heal well, and fast, and don't worry, I'm another who is fascinated by scan and x ray images!!!!!! I would also like to point out that if nothing else, this thread has taught me NOT TO TRY TO LAND ON MY FEET lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tennessee - You poor thing, my sister had CFS for years, are you on any programme for gradual exercise? If it helps to know she recovered and is now a Farmer's wife! Crazy girl!

Yep I did that kind of programme many years ago, but it wasn't really working, and when my physio told me off for LAUGHING with my friends (it's too stressful, don't you know, you can't do that!) I gave up, and started doing things my way. I now do mon - fri looking after 4 horses in a sole use yard (like a job but my pay is use of the horses as my own), as this fits in with being a 'stay at home' mum (who's never at home) while hubby works. It also gives my son a pony to ride as his own, free :p :D

I still get it wrong sometimes, but am managing ok, just tired atm due to planning permission problems, hubby work change and the onset of dreaded winter (hate dark mornings, feel like hibernating!) I think mental stress hits me hardest atm as I'm fairly fit with all the yard work I'm doing!!!!! and I have done stints on professional yards since diagnosis, so I'm doing something right lol!!!!

Sorry, that went on a bit didn't it? Hugs to you. big healing vibes too!!!! :):):):):):)

Hope you all get well soon!! xx

I must say snap! I did mine 2 years ago on 10th august! Unfortuantley in April this year I found that my tib had not healed, so was back in (different hospital 3rd august) to be operated on all over again, an extra pin and a small bone graft were required! Also due to not being looked after correctly the first time I now have bad cartilage damage (oestoarthritis) and will never regain full movement but this time physio is more important than ever and going out driving today and plan on riding at least a week on Monday

Hope you feel better soon, and your leg will hold you up dont worry it just feels really weird the first few times :)

I agree - why to we do it! At least im worth more than i was with lots of metal in my leg!

Not that I know when Ill be ready but I have already planned which horse I am going to sit on when the time comes. I trust him completely so feel he is the right horse to get on. After such a bad injury I do want to get back on but dont know how I will be - has it completely shaken my confidence - not sure - not sure how I will react. After 20 odd years of riding and falling off so many times off crazy horses - am i getting older and wiser to this!(did I have to have the injury to realise this?)

Thankfully my horse is only 2 and a bit years old so plenty of time for me to get back into it - but now think i will send him away to be backed! :( I have always loved doing it myself but not sure I can take the risk.

And I am going to have to get on from the wrong side!

And I am going to have to get on from the wrong side!

Katt, I've just re looked at your xrays. I see what you mean about getting on from the otherside, bless your left foot! Take the advantage of the fact it will be easier to drive than the right foot!

Maybe we should all take up vaulting, and really put our bones and nerves to the test :) I too am apprehensive about getting back on, but only to the extent of worrying it will hurt. I really want my horse to work on her walk canter transitions so I don't have to trot, I can't imagine the what that's going to fell like at the moment.

I've had lots of offers of 'steady' mounts before I get back on my baby, but to be fair it's the first time I've come off her, we just did it in style, so I'm going to have a little talk in her ear to remind her to look after her human.

Katt you mentioned having 2 screws removed, do you know which ones? Only I have the same two in the end of the tibia and would like to know if they are likely to come out. I'm back to see the Consultants on Monday so shall ask anyway, just interested to know the reasons behind the removal etc.

Oh to be able to muck out! x
