Hi I'm new on here so thought I would find out how many people enjoy the less than perfect horse. I rehab problem horses off any sort and sercure their furtures so they aren't pasted around from piller to post. I hate a perfect ride and enjoy the horses who give me a bit to sit to and think about. Iv turned so called dangerous horses around to loving riding horses and had 2 new projects turn up this week. Anybody the same as me?

I fell in love with one without realising how stubborn he could be haha! He's not so much of a problem just a nightmare to catch! Any suggestions?

I do agree though, it is more fun but I myself having some really good days and some pretty bad so it's like a rollercoaster! I've been offered a perfect horse on loan and refused as I think my boy has the ability to teach me so much more!

Me me me me me me me!!!

I LOVE project horses! Soon as I hear the words "Can't ride her, she's psycho" then I'm in there!

I might be afraid to jump 4.6ft, I might be scared poopless by the thought of a cross country course. But give me a horse you're too scared to ride, and I'm in my element!

However, I can't afford to work on them professionally. Shame really, I'd love it :(

Ha you are so like me. I'm the same any horse I hear that has issues I'm right in there. Get given most off them as people can't sell. Did fracture my back last year mind when one went up and over so quickly I didn't see it coming. Couldn't wait to ride her again

My teenage years were spent on the back of one horse or another that would be 'loony rides' that would try their best to put me on my head. I loved it.

Think it was a teen thing though, as now I'm so much more appreciative of the nice mannered horses and youngsters we get. To be honest now, a good, well mannered, genuine horse is priceless to me.
Do I want to be going past a blade of grass out of place and knowing the horse is going to have a flip out at it? Not really.
Do I want to be going down to 4ft+ jumps on a horse that's 50:50 on whether to take off or slat? Noo thankyou!
Do I want a bouncing ill mannered loonies to ride constantly? Nope nope nope!

Out of choice anyway. Still get the odd quirky ones and a little bit interested to the endless 'project' adverts out...but I'd stick to my lovely little neddy and the rest of our lot at the end of the day! I wouldn't say any of them are 'easy' rides as they're all bright and there [apart from hairycob obv!As long as the world keeps turning and he has food, he don't care bout anything!], but not problem or naughty ones at all! All lovely lovely lovely :) The more well mannered the more I like them...I like to ride now to be able to just sit there and have a nice chillout ride whether it be schooling, jumping, hunting, hacking, or just chilling on the ground! etc :)

I'll still get on the problem ones don't get me wrong, you do get satisfaction from working through issues and ending up with a nice horse 6,9,12 months down the line. For me personally, it p*sses me off too much now getting horses that are only problems because of ignorance from people to start with.

oh yeah! I love me a problem :) None of my horses I have had over the years have been simple - my first horse was a 14.2hh gypsy cob who was 4 and had been broken 3 months when I had him. Consistently ran off, stopped, bucked etc etc and I loved him :) I have had a rescue pony who had been beaten and was so badly injured when she first arrived that we thought she would lose her eye. I currently have two ex racers - dylan who is 9 and who generally is a soppy sod but out hacking he can be a devil - rears ,bucks, spanish riding school of vienna moves all because he is on his own :) Wouldn't change him for the world though :) and Rio who is fresh out of racing and is of the mindset that attack is the best form of defence with some things esp feet and being shod although ridden wise he is pretty special for a 3 year old again he is who he is and I wouldn't change him but he will off tp pastures new soon so I am trying to calm this side of his personality down slightly :)

I do and I don't, I like quirky horses who make me sit up and ride properly, but I don't go for the "psycho" horses! I have one of each at the moment who I love them both to bits, I guess it depends on my mood, If I want to do some serious schooling then I would get on the mare and try and get her to slow down and stop being a stroppy cow (chestnut welsh...). However if I want an easy session then I get on my ploddy but forward going well behaved cob.

I'm with Binky. I did my time as a teenager with truly dangerous horses. Now I am middle aged I just want to enjoy my riding and not be worried about what happens to my cats etc etc if I end up in hospital. A nicely bred sensible youngster is my dream once I become a horse owner again.

Lol I'm only just over 20 but feel middle aged XD Not good!

My years in high school up until I left college 2 years ago were various collections of falls and 'almost' moments which were great fun at the time! [Like deciding to ride backwards bareback on my mate's notoriously nappy and ungenuine horse for a laugh and jumping it like it!]

All I learnt from that was that you can sit broncs so much better facing backwards holding on to their tail! Pmsl.
Ahem. So yes.

Though my riding sessions these days now seem to onvolve of spontanious run ins with the hunt and randomly having a days hunting...suicidal flying dear...stalker pheasants and ninja grannies!!! Lmao. Thank god for nice neddies we have :P

See, you had the inner nutty teenager in me automatically go 'MEEEEE!' there for a second!! :p
Old habits die hard haha!
Lol.

Yes and no!

I love working with the "difficult" ones on the ground - there is really nothing that they can do there that fazes me and it is so good to see nervous or (more often) ill mannered horses become a pleasure to handle.

25 years ago, as a teenager I loved the fruit loops, a ride was boring if I didn't dice with death at least a dozen times:o but I've grown out of that now! I'm over 40 with bills to pay and other responsibilities.....plus I don't bounce as well as I did and the injuries from those mad days have caught up with me in the form of damaged discs, arthritic ankle and a general lack of athleticism:p I also really value a quiet, controlled hack these days.....

Oh Yes ;) You Sound JUST Like Me :p x

I would never buy a horse, knowing that he is difficult and dangerous.
But I bought my idiot nearly five years ago, not knowing, that the next two years would have been that hard.

Artos FWH (with a, in Germany known as, "difficult" pedigree:: Pit1/Pilot and Argentan/Absatz) was my dream horse, and the former owner told me, that he loves hacking. Harharhar ...
I bet he never went out for one, because he cowered away from everything: pedestrians with dogs, wooden benches, tractors, even small bushes and his own shadow were the reason for him to shy, rise or bolt.
At this time some people said that he is a killer ... :(
... and I began loving him.

Today he is still very spooky and anxious, but I can handle it/him and I accepted his being crazy. I'm always on the alert and never fell off while hacking, but on the ground I kissed the carpet many times in the beginning. ;)
Lots of other horse owners would never take a ride on him, not for all the money in the world.
And I would never sell him now !!

PS
Sorry for the bad orthography !
