Who feeds their good doers just hay and a feed balancer?

Er yes. Thats what mine get - one is more of a good doer than the other though. I have to add extras in winter for her.

This is the less of a good doer - as this pic is in the summer, she would have been on restricted grazing, half a scoop of Alfa A and a cup of TopSpec

And this is the real fatty - again summer (pic is inside, so she is shineier in real life!!) so she was on soaked hay, mixed with oat straw, restricted grazing, good doer chaff and TopSpec

Mine has Lo cal, Alfa A lite and a cup of comp mix (extra if needed). I need the energy but cant feed him to much as he looks at food and puts on weight.

Yep, it is all they need. They aren't particularly good doers but fortunatly (for the pennies!) they just don't need anything else. In summer they get a handful of fast fibre with their supplement, in winter they get half a scoof of no molasses chaff and a handful of skeedi beet with the supplements. Any hay is soaked to remove sugars. They look v well on it and have plenty of energy and stamina for long hacks and competing,

Almost, George is a 16.3 TB shire x and has hay and then a couple of handfuls of hi-fi lite to mix his baileys lo-cal into. Also most of the summer he has a muzzle on as he is such a good doer! He seems to have plenty of energy and does local level dressage, sj, xc plus schooling and hacking :)

Very good doers, straw and a balancer until after to christmas then they get 50/50 straw and hay.
I remember sending a pony to PC camp with just hay, a bag of chaff and a balancer. The instructer was horrified but you feed what you see in front of you.

Well I'm an evil owner, I do as I did when I was a child - good doers get grass only, dried (hay) in the winter if they are in or if there is snow on the ground. They get little, if anything, else.

Same.

Phil had 550g blue chip lami lite and a handful of hi fi lite in winter when ridden. Stopped being fed in Feb.

Ditto evil owner - nothing but strip grazing in summer, barley straw/hay mix in winter with a handful of both chaff & D&G pasture mix with garlic and cidar vinegar when he's done some work. Just hay in cold winter, not that evil ;)

Yes ours do. They get a cheapy general vit & mineral supplement from out local feed merchant mixed with a small handful of lo cal chaff. When I used to use a different pelleted feedbalancer they had it straight.

In the winter they might get some soaked beet too if I feel kind. The less good doer gets chaff, beet and some alfalfa nuts.

At WHW (when it used to be ILPH) of the 130 odd horse only about 20 or so had feed, normaly just those who deeded meds, the rest were on grass/hay depeding on time of the year and mineralised salt lick.

Mine is on soaked hay, restricted grass and a mug full of Thunderbrook Essential Base mix (organic balancer),

He looks the picture of health, no longer the obese laminitic he was this summer when I was feeding him SS Lucie nuts too.

Of course it can be done!

Some of the good doers I ride only get grass/hay with a mineral lick available in their field/stable, and a handful of happy hoof after a damn good work out.

MY cob will get hay( not yet as still grass to eat) dengi good doer and formula for feet , he really needs nothing else.

Both of mine are on a bare paddock, chaser clipped and un-rugged (unless its freezing or raining) they are 14.2 retired Fell and 12.2 show pony type, Melly (Fell) has half a scoop of HiFi Lite, Equivite original, garlic, glucosamine and no-bute, Seren (show pony) is in foal (4 months) is worked 3 times a week on the lunge and has a large handful of hifi lite, garlic and equivite orig...both are still too good, if I dared feed more they would explode!
If your horse is a good doer, and is able to be worked, then a balancer is a perfect way of supplying the nutrients without the calories, unfortunately both f mine put weight ON when I put them on top spec anti lam! And yes, I was giving them the right amount!

Ditto...mine gets a sprinkle of HiFi Good Doer when his fieldmate gets fed but that is it.

Yep, both of mine have hay, 2 cups of Baileys Lo-Cal Balancer and a handful of chaff. I hunt one of them and he is has plenty of energy without needing any extra hard feed.

No. Definitely not. Mine need a heck of a lot more than that.

i.e. a paddock full of grass (tested for minerals).

Oh alright, just so you don't think I'm cruel, I do give them a haynet when it's really bl00dy cold. Sometimes I put a rug on...

Vet has been to do his teeth and she knew him in his last home also - she has advised grass when out, hay when in at night. He does get a small amount of happy hoof at the moment when the old girl is fed. Will prob carry on giving him a small amount when stabled at night but in his stable toy and he'll have a himalayan salt lick. Thanks for all the replies too xx

Well I feed both of my fatties the same. Grass, hay and our local feed merchants budget mix. Fatty one, my cob gets a handful of mix in his bucket only because the other fatty gets two meals a day and they are stabled next to each other. Fatty two, Mini TX;s eventer gets a scoop twice a day of said mix, plus hay and grass. She is fit and events at Novice level on this small amount of food. They both look great, we dont feed supplements either.
