I am in need of a dressage saddle for my black horse and have been wondering what to get him - I'd like to get an Ideal Suzannah type of saddle but can't seem to find one second hand so thinking about a Jaguar.

I know they don't fit all horses so can you tell me what sort of horse they would fit? Kal is a narrow TB type but a big rangy French-bred with quite a flat back. He fits into my Butet XC perfectly but my Devoucoux is a bit wide on him.

Any thoughts?

Friend has one on a KWPN (dressage bred by Lord Sinclair). He's 16.1hh, 6 yo and has had it since a newly backed 3 yr old. It's a MW. Saying that, to ride he feels wider than my 16.2hh TB mare who is also in a MW (albion).

I don't actually like my albion to ride in as it does nothing for my lower leg so am actually planning on trying said Jaguar on my mare to see if it helps as when I've ridden Zen I've felt in a better position although that might just because he's "rounder" than my mare.

ETA am going to do it soon as Zen is up for sale so obviously need to try the saddle sooner rather than later... if I remember I'll let you know if it fits.

Pilfer had (just sold it on eBay) a jaguar dressage saddle.

he is wide, has no withers and a very flat back with ginormous shoulders like sandbags!

haven't got a pic of him wearing it but here is one of him in the field so you can see his build.

I rode in one for a while on my Medium Dutch warmblood after a trainer recommended it. I have to say that he went nicely in it for a week or so, then started to loose his movement. The saddler said that the banana shaped panels on Jaguars don't suit all horses, some really hate them, so I went back to my Ideal Suzannah (which I should have stuck with in the first place). The Jaguar is comfy to ride in though. :)

Am I right in saying that Bates saddles are banana shaped too?

I have a Jaguar XKC close contact on Fugs - it is about the fourth dressage saddle I've tried on him and the first one that I've been really happy with. I had an Albion that fitted him but not me, and a Barnsby that was too narrow for him. I really, really love it. He has a high wither and is quite narrow but surprisingly fits best in a MW Jaguar . His XC Butet is a medium and fits well too.

I suspect that it will be a case of 'suck it and see' (isn't it always ;)). I'm just waiting for it to cripple my horse as at least two people have ensured me that Jaguar's inevitably will......

Picture if it helps:

I use one on my Dutch warmblood - he is either a narrow medium or medium fitting and has fairly high withers and a rounded back (but not flat). I like the fact that they seem to have plenty of flocking in them - they seem to look very comfortable for the horse. I love riding in mine. I've had it for about 3/4 years and it still looks like new!

I would try lots of different types to see which fits best. Where abouts are you in the country - perhaps someone on here could recommend somewhere / one to go to?
