I never did, even though my horses get theirs checked every 6 months or as needed i've always said i cant afford to get mine checked even though i get back problems and hace constant pulled muscles etc!
Id like to bet this is the case with most of us, paying for the back lady for the horse but ignoring our own!
Mine got so sore i was waking up everynight unable to put my own boots on without propping myself against a wall amongst other things so i went.

WOW i'd so so recommend it, i feel like a new person almost!
Put yourself first for once and go book a treatment!

I've had re-occuring back aches on and off for ages. In summer last year I loaned a new horse and after riding him for a few days I was convinced he was very 'lop-sided'. A friend suggested it might actually be me! So booked an appointment with the physio and my pelvic bone was about 2 inches out on one side!!! Two sessions later and I was 'as right as rain'. Vowed to myself I'm going to go for a session every 8-10 months.

Partner and I both have ours done. Only afford once in a blue moon but worth it. Annoyingly mine is only bad when I have a long break from riding as my core goes!

No but I've been toying with the idea of getting some physio (have chronic back pain and have tried through the NHS with no success) but it's so expensive!

I have two weeks of intensive physio around once a year due to a long term back injury.
The last time I had any work done was around a year ago and I am feeling sore now so may book myself in again.
God knows what it would cost if I didn't pay into a work scheme for it.

I've had back problems for 25 years and have always been to chiroprators and osteopaths. However, I now have a sports massage every 2 weeks and have never been in better shape :D

I never used to, but now I make sure I do every time my horse is done, otherwise I think it kind of defeats the object of having his back done in the first place. I also go to an osteopath in between when any niggles occur and can't recommend it highly enough. Having my back put right and maintained has definitely had a positive effect on my riding.

Who do you see Physio, Oestio or Chiro

I've been toying with the idea for a while and occasionally see a physio as I have a recurring twitch under my should blade and have been wondering if its a symptom of another issue...

Yes - I've had a problem with my neck / shoulders before (too much hunching over a keyboard) and also my pelvis (dragging water trugs around).
Osteopath clunked it back into the right place and it's been fine ever since.

I also prefer sports massage, my shoulders were damaged years ago, and after physio and lots of pain relief, i decided to try deep tissue massage, initially it was painful, but after 3 sessions, my shoulders were great and ive not needed to take pain relief for them since.
I recently had a bit of lower nack pain and had a massage again, my lt leg was shorter than my rt by about an inch  having been for 2 sessions, i now am able to stretch well down into my stirrup and my back pain os gone, hopefully after mt next session everything will be as it should be again

I have similar problems, Marydoll, after a long-ago bike accident, and I have found that Sports Massage is pretty much the only treatment that actually helps. My goodness, does it hurt though!!

Just like horsey back men theres lots of quacks about for human back treatments.
Please check them out thoroughly before you let any one touch you. They can make you much worse, especially if the source of pain isn't known.

Yes the NHS isn't much help in many cases, but at least physios are regulated and can be very helpful.
Chiropracters can do more harm than good and scientific evidence of their trade is thin on the ground. Although we all know someone who's been to so and so "they cracked it back into place" I would still caution folk to be careful.
I myself am suffering crippling sciatica but nothing has helped thus far...

Very very true, now x husband suffered extreme back pain, he asked the horse 'back man' to look at him when the horses were done. ( we are in worcs/warks area and back man was one of the leading names in 1990's, many of you older horsemen will know who I am talking about). Husband was pushed and shoved about and 'sorted'.

He woke up in the night unable to feel his legs, rushed into hospital and had major surgery the next day. His surgeons told him whatever had been done had been within an inch of putting him in a wheelchair for life.

Fear not, I am not a big fan of quackery (and that's an understatement) hence me saying quite specifically physio for me :) And for the record, the only person that sees my horses backs is an ACPAT physio too. Aren't I just a big, fat sceptic hey?!

I've a sports massage, but wasn't as painful as some of you say - now I feel I didn't get my money's worth ;)

I'm going on a hen weekend in two weeks, and my spa treatment for the weekend is a neck back and shoulder massage, can't wait!

Having said that, have booked the horse chiro for 30 April, Osteo for 23 May - and considering finding a physio to come out before then if I can. But money spent on hroses is monopoly money, not REAL money, right?!

Edited to say, our horses have been seeing the mctimoney chiro for years (5 at least?) and he only ever seems to make the horses go better, he uses a pulse machine and an equimassage at the end of their treatments if needed, which they love :)

When I got my new boy I had some lesson and RI kept saying I was crooked and one sided, even though I didn't feel it. So went to the chiro (hadn't been for years) She said my back was out making one leg longer than other, didn't realise how much pain I had been in until she sorted me out:)

Yes I do have sports massage every two weeks ( really feel it if I miss) and see a lady who does VHT which is sort of like bowen and see a physio if I am getting a nasty niggle I have learnt that there is no point of having a constant stream of equine body workers physios etc coming to the pampered ones if I am crippled !

I go to the physio every 6 weeks or more often if required. Fell over in the ice recently and had to have 2 sessions a week apart, but next appt not for 6 weeks.

I agree if you get the horse done it is pointless if you don't get yourself sorted out too.......... not to mention I can hardly walk if I don't go!!!

I go to a chiropractor every two or three months. Absolutely agree there are some complete quacks out there, but good ones do exist and shouldn't be dismissed.

I had a ruptured disc a few years back. Physio was worse than useless, doctor just wanted to put me under the knife. Chiropractor not only brought immediate relief but quick recovery (climbed my first mountain six weeks later) AND recommended good follow ups in the form of exercises, stretching and pilates. Couldn't recommend him highly enough; I dread to think what my life and health might have been like for the last few years without seeing him.

Oh really!? Just me being tight then! In reality I couldn't afford it, everytime I thought about booking I'd need the farrier or something. I'm getting my treatment on the nhs my doctor was very helpful altho they have been saying for years nothing was wrong with my back! When I asked for a referral it was an immediate yes. I intend to try and keep it up once I've got on top of it.

I have something that sounds exactly the same! I can't decide what to do about it. Does the physio help? I was thinking of getting a sports massage but need it to be worth it to pay for it!
