Evening all!
Question in title. My mare is retired and her insurance is due for renewal feb. I was thinking of cancelling as her age means it will be injury only. Do you all insure your retired oldies??

Yes mine are insured, although I was thinking of cancelling my very old boys as it covers nothing except third party any more. I am going to get BHS Gold membership for the third party cover instead.

I have always had my oldie on full insurance but will be changing to a Veteran plan this time around.
I have come to this decision as i am not insured for the thing I need to be (laminitis) and would be unlikely to put her through a major operation such as colic. But I would still like to keep her insured for accidents and third party. It is a tough thing to decide though.

I did until the exclusions made it not worth it, but by then he had been covered for 2 major injuries. Conkers - I didn't think I'd put my boy through surgery but at 35 he had to have a shattered hind splint bone removed - and sailed through it!

Yep - my horse isn't fully retired but i will keep him insured when he is. He had a serious injury in the field last year (fractured leg) and the total vet bill was just short of £5k.

My veteran is 27. He was fully insured until I think aged 21 then he had to go onto veteran policy which is field injury only. But this year I have stopped insuring him altogether because I'm covered for 3rd party through BHS gold. And as he has only 1 eye, chronic lung damage from his severe summer pollen allergy and now Cushings then the reality is that if he had a mild field injury, I'd care for it myself as normal: if a more serious field injury needing the vets for eg stitches then the bill wouldn't be as much as my excess: and - sadly - if a severe injury then there is no possibility he could survive a GA or even box rest (breaths per minute when stressed shoot up to over 65). I'm content with this but I guess each case needs to be considered on its own merit.
