Who is going to do the 6 monthly vaccinations then?

I'm not going to but I don't compete although I will be out hunting regularly throughout the season. My horse had a 6 monthly vaccination earlier this year when the flu epidemic started therefore he was due another vaccination recently if I was going to keep up the 6 monthly frequency. I spoke to my vet who advised me to stick to annual vaccinations. Obviously if you want to compete and the venues insist you won't have a choice. It might be worth checking with the equestrian centres in your area.

Our local venues are not asking for it. In a year or so would like to affiliate one so will have to do it for that horse. Will not bother for the others unless they need it for comps - they can stay at annuals.

The venues round here are still asking for 6 monthy vaccs so if I want to compete at any time I'll need them doing.

Most of the venues I go to have been asking for 6 monthly flu boosters so mine are already done and will continue with that schedule.

We mostly show in the summer so will get all the ones that go out vaccinated in late spring to last until the end of the season which is roughly 6 months that way they will mostly be within the 6 months but only vaccinated once a year

Our livery yard and sister yard are insisting on 6-month injections for everyone, including the OAPs. We do have a few horses that are out and about a lot so it makes sense as if one of them were to bring it back it could spread easily as they graze in groups and social groom over fences too.

I've just had mine done but I don't know if I'll keep it up if venues don't demand it.

Haven't competed or gone to lessons at all this year, hoping to next year though so I will do 6 monthly jabs if that is required. The retirees will stick to 12 months.

Yep those who will be at higher risk (ie going out and about and mixing with other horses) will stay at 6 months.

Doodle I'm undecided, she'd be worse effected if she caught it being older, but then she doesn't tend to leave the yard so less risk of contracting it...

Yep, had mine done. It costs £30 each with no call out fee on a zone day with my vets which isn't to bad really.

Friend of mine paid £75 entry fees last weekend and booked transport, to realize it was 6 monthly vaccinations and she forgot to get hers re-jabbed so was over 6 months. £75 down the drain plus deposit on transport.

Yes for the one I am planning on taking out and about fairly regularly, the other two will be annual and I will just be restricted to 6 months of the year when I can take them to comp centres.

Mine are now on a 9-month schedule. The research suggests that the vaccine loses effectiveness from 8 months post-vaccination onwards, so I'm trying to time the vaccinations to get the best out of winter and summer seasons ... with a little break in between. It's all a bit costly round here but needs must.

Yes I have been doing them since the Spring as many venues I compete at require a vaccination within last 6 months. I was really shocked arriving at the Hickstead Sunshine Tour that passports were not checked for day visitors. I am hoping they were for those who stayed overnight.

Luckily ours are due March anyway so we will be covered for the summer show season. I guess if we needed winter cover then I'd have to get them done 6 monthly though. I probably wouldn't if not competing though.

Being interested in the health of my horses, I am sticking at 6 months for the time being because the evidence is clear that they provide more protection. Mine don't go to any venues and live at home, but they are still better off that way.

Annual only for me. I only do endurance & pleasure rides and they are all mainly annual, some have no stipulation.

I have discussed with my vet as 3 of mine always seem to get reactions

For me, it’s not about what venues are specifying. (I don’t compete and have horses at home). It’s about protecting my horses (and, by extension, the horse population at large through herd immunity - although, with the low vaccination rate in the U.K., this does seem like a pipe dream).

Flu is airborne and can travel quite considerable distances in the right circumstances so, to some extent, whether or not it’s competition season is irrelevant in risk status.

I don’t need a competition venue to tell me to vaccinate my horses: I’m following vet advice and vaccinating at six monthly intervals until the situation changes.

I've gone over 6 months with The Beast but will work out how to get her and the new boy in sync. Unless I start going to venues that ask for 6 monthly I was thinking about going to an 8 or 9 month schedule for both jabs and teeth. 6 month always seems a bit soon for teeth if they're generally ok but after a year it always feels like there's a lot to do... so 9 months might be about right for that too.

Flu wise I'm a long way from any cases and although there's been a few new horses recently no one on my yard really goes and competes a lot. So I think we're quite low risk.

Our vets - equine specialists - are not recommending 6 monthly as a blanket measure. The outbreaks this year are all the same strain which is now covered by current vaccines. The inference that only people who vaccinate every 6 months are responsible owners is frankly a bit silly.
