I did run a livery yard, and am I in the process of shutting it down/ more or less is shut down.
When people have left I have not replaced them.
I had a livery leave and go else where as we don't have an indoor school and me and the other livery don't 'do' enough so its not a motivating enough place to be or something like that.
I recently had my first proper holiday since 2019 and when I was away I got a message from the ex livery saying they want to come back (they knew I was away on holiday). I didn't reply to this message until the last day of my week's holiday as they said they had handed in their notice at current yard and when was it best to move back in. I said sorry but I no longer do livery and I am closing down etc. They said well the other liveries still there (2 in total, one has bought a property but solicitor is taking ages sorting stuff out and move is imminent), and one of the other livery is going for a difficult time (mentally and had been hospitalised the day I got the message). Old livery who wanted to come back then got very upset with me etc etc, and I am a terrible person etc. They had some stuff behind, mats etc, which I did say I would by off them, well in leu of their last bill, but know they wanted new cost price for them. I said no to this, as they are old and damaged so just pick them up. This doesn't suit as they don't want them or have anywhere to store them. Now I have mats but I haven't paid for them, and I have washed them and put them to one side o now what???
With all this drama I have heard that I was rude and it came out of no where that I was closing, terrible human etc etc. I was accused of being rude, but looking through the messages I was polite and only got very direct (as I would put it) when other people's names where mentioned as I felt that was a step too far. I did send every livery a letter in January saying that the use of the yard is changing, and said I was closing multiple times. Although technically I have spare stables I have moved the horses around (stables are in smalll blocks) so I have filled one block, so if a horse came back it would need to be stabled alone. Also I am growing my own hay this (don't get me started on the weather!) so I don't actually have many spare fields and the group of horses, which are mainly mine are all getting on really well, settled etc and I don't want to split them up. If another horse came I would have to break up the group and either new horse would have to be alone or one of mine would have to be. Anyways you may of all hears my now that I a horrible b*tch etc and my (now closed) yard is terrible and managed terribly.
I cannot see what I have done wrong, but I think its is crystal clear why I don't want to run a yard anymore.

Old livery sounds like a royal pain. Good job you aren't having them back. You don't need to give them any other reasons.
Just seen your latest reply - I'd be livid with them contacting my mother and interfering with my life! Well done on staying calm!

Re mats - I'd just tell them the price you are willing to pay for them (the old bill) and if they aren't happy with that they need to collect by 'x' date and pay you what they owe you.

You are not supposed to run your life to accommodate other people. The sense of entitlement in people these days staggers me but then I am probably regarded as an old fogie for expecting manners and consideration.

You sound as if you have given them plenty of notice and are being very considerate to the remaining liveries while they sort out issues in their own lives. Deciding to leave a yard is a decision for the individual and they can't expect others to turn their lives upside down just to correct a bad decision. Stick to your guns. If you are not intending to run a livery yard in the future then you need not worry about your "reputation" as a yard manager.

As regards the remaining kit, it is up to the owner to collect (and be grateful that you have cleaned it!!)

Enjoy the peace and freedom!!

I could feel my anxiety and stress levels rising which is why I didn't reply to messages when on holiday (I thought that's what people do in normal jobs 😂) and when they kicked off I didn't do anything regarding mats etc, just that they can pick them up if they arrange a time to do so and let everyone cool off.
I do think when I was running the yard I always ended up putting me and my horses behind 'paying' clients, such as moving mine into the wetter fields, other stables etc to accommodate.
I think it must be annoying to know there is yard sitting here with empty stables, but they left here and chose to do so. I also think me putting my foot down when discussing 3rd parties (the other livery who is not well) is fair.

That sounds a little like our yard. YOs are selling up, it's actively on the market and the number of liveries have been allowed to dwindle over the last year or so, mainly due to horses dying rather than people leaving. YO has made it very clear that she's happy for us to stay at the moment and the yard is being sold as a going concern so hopefully new owners would keep us on but that if we leave, we can't come back. None of us want to anyway!

You haven't done anything wrong as far as I can see. There's a huge difference between allowing those already there to stay and taking on new liveries, even if they're returning. Someone wise once said to me "silence is a response and often the best one."

Why on earth would an ex livery kick off when told there is no livery yard now? If the local swimming pool closed and became a cinema, would ex customers turn up in swimming costumes and kick off that they couldn't swim? Bonkers
I am sorry but that's hilarious 😂
Is kind of that situation though as I am getting a non-horsey full time job so can't have horses on full livery when I won't be there to do them!

If this person thinks that you are horrible and your yard is terrible I wonder why she's so keen to come back
I often find with managing yards that it's not fancy facilities that people actually want. Yes I don't have an indoor, solarium etc but its basic stuff, like actually doing what you tell people you are going to do. If the YO says the horse is going in the field, make sure it actually goes in the field. Think people see all the 'flash' but it has to work around the horse which I believed I had achieved here, everyone (i.e the horses) where calm and quiet and settled.
I also got told that I was expensive but actually I was very much in line with other yards, if not cheaper but I didn't do 'hidden' costs.

Its a shame, because the only facility I have ever looked for was individual grazing 24/7 365 days and a friendly yard manager. No school and no other requirements. Rude people ruin it for everyone else 😊

I'd padlock the empty stables in case she decides just to turn up and puts her horse in her.

Or tell her she can come, but treble the livery fee😈
This!
Also make sure you padlock external.gates or change the locks if she knows the combination /has a key! She sounds crazy enough to just turn up , either with her horse or to cause trouble!

why are you engaging with this person? All you need is one e mail. Simply set out, you chose to leave, the yard is now closed, no further horses are being taken, your bill of X is outstanding please pay within 30 days. Some of your possessions remain here please remove in 30 days. If they are not removed I will assume you no longer require them and they will be disposed of.
I do not intend to engage in further correspondence or phone calls. End of.

Just make sure the yard is kept locked and be prepared if she turns up nag in tow to reinforce no. Not my problem your horse is homeless.

Good riddance. Pat yourself on the back for being professional and don’t worry. You can’t control other peoples behaviour but you can control yours. Onwards and upwards and tbh it’s your private property and up to you what you do with it. You don’t have to justify your decisions.

DB, I'd do as others have said, give her a date to collect mats and pay you outstanding money's.
Once done, ignore...

I still go into my little yard and grin, just my 2, tho 5 stables (could be 7 if needed) and its all exactly as I left it.

Do not be persuaded.....

A localish yard, a v good BHS approved one with fab indoor, closed its doors earlier this year. Lovely yo. She has just a couple of liveries there, both old friends of hers. She says tho finances are dipped she is so much happier, can do much more coaching and competing (and is). She looks much younger now!

So the grass isn't greener on another yard. That's not your fault. Presuming you didn't say come back at any time, she is pretty entitled for her to think she could come back before you respond. She has made a mistake not your issue and no need to engage anymore as she is no longer a customer.

Wow. Stick to your guns. You have made the decision, end of. Doesn't sound the sort you would want back even if you decided to continue. Some people are just so entitled these days.
