I share fields with other liveries (electric fenced) which is fine as my horse is out a night, theres are out 24/7. However their horses have a habit of jumping/running through the fence and they only come to check them on an evening so obviously I have to round up & catch their horses on a morning...took me over half an hour this morning which made me late for work. I also do rugs etc for them in the morning if they are twisted etc and basically keep an eye on them (they havent asked me to do this but obviously I dont want to leave them like that all day). Now I make the effort to get up at 5:30 so I can get my horse done before work and I dont see why I should have to do theirs too just because they "dont have time" to come in the morning. But on the other hand I cant leave their horses lose in my field...? So who has the responsibility for their horses in the morning, what would you do??

If I were you I would be having a word with your YO/YM as it is not your responsibility and it sounds like some people are taking advantage of the fact that you are a responsible horse owner.

Know it is hard to do and I think I would be doing the same but if it was making me late for work not worth your time to do what after all are their horses. Their horses their responsible I would have thougth a few times found in the wrong place at the wrong time they will get the message. Or start charging them £1 a day??

Really difficult one, it is up to them to sort their horses out.

I have just spent 15 mins catching and moving a horse because she would have been out on her own. She wouldn’t catch then i had to put her in a field next to other horses and give her water.

I would expect someone else to do the same for my horses and would expect them to straighten rugs etc if need be but then i am not doing it for someone who cant be bothered to look after their horses.

I agree with above posts. If it was my horse I'd be mortified if I found out someone else was having to sort my rugs etc in the morning. We had incidences of horses escaping from my field into others but as all the horses got on we were ok and could leave them until the owners came (unless their rugs had moved as you say). I'd mention it to the owners or YO/YM, see if an agreement could be reached as they're not your responsibility but I agree that I couldn't leave them with their rugs twisted etc.

Exactly, I would expect someone to do that for my horse if the same thing happened to him (afterall its not their fault their horses jump the fence!) and it doesnt happen every day...but the days it does happen its blooming annoying that they wont catch easily etc!!

TBH horses on diy/ grass livery need checking in the mornings aswell as the evenings and your YO/YM needs to tell them so.

I had a similar thing on a livery yard where out of 8 owners there was only two of us that ever carted water to the field daily and checked everyone and it caused bad feeling. Its not as easy others were saying in 'well just don't do' it cos ours needed to drink aswell.

I think these people are taking advantage of your good nature and the fact they don't have to make an effort because they know you are there doing everything.

Just let them know you don't have the time to be doing their horses and they need to check the fencing and rugs themselves.
If the fencing is constantly being broken the yard need to put up something more robust.

They do,and unless you tell them rugs are all over the place and the horses are often in the wrong field's when you do your in the morning, how are they to know?

I would attempt to catch and return them, but not if it made me late for work and would leave a note for them/message with YO so they know whats going on.

I wouldn't do anything to them but tell the yard owner, then its up the YO and owners to sort it out. If you keep on helping you will be doing this forever.

I don't do any favours on weekday mornings as if I have any spare time before work I want to be either grooming or riding my own. May sound harsh, but my time is limited.

At our old yard we were putting out and bringing in 6 others and our 2... never again.

Very interesting to hear about your livery problems. A student took one of my horses to a top training and competition establishment and brought him back to my yard in a terrible state. He was so thin all his ribs showed. Pin bones and every vertebrae stuck out. She said it was because he was fit and the lack of muscle was due to the fact that there were no hills in the area! I wrote to the college who replied saying that they accepted no responsibility for the condition of my horse as, although he was stabled on campus, he was a livery and not one of their horses! Trading standards have now taken up the case

We have the same problems at the yard I am on except it is the YM horses that are the one's loose. They break the fencing (often into the field my 2 horses are in), snapped electric fencing as well even when I have left it on when my 2 come in for the night. Quite often they are loose at lunchtime as well so not only am I late in the morning, I end up being late back to work at lunchtime as can't get mine out their field if there are loose horses or I will end up with them running round with the escaped ones! At our yard it always the same ones that end up catching/removing escaped horses, the ones that have to work full time.

I agree that it is totally frustrating. Obviously the occassional escapee can be expected as they are animals but when it is a regular occurrence and the horses owners are not doing anything to try at prevent it happening by erecting more secure fencing, it is infuriating. Perhaps as someone else has said you should make a note of when you are having to do things and charge the individual owners for your time.

DIY is as stated. do it yourself!!! thats why i dont and wont have them on my yard! all horses need to be checked as often as possible. each day has 24 hours inwhich they can get into mischief and if wearing rugs or headcollars the risk increases! i bet the other people wouldnt leave their kids unchecked? you need to speak to the YO or YM. i would like to think no one would leave a horse in need of attention but a line has to be drawn as to who does what!
