I have two horses and both are insured with NFU. I had to claim for a £700 vet bill in july and within two weeks, they had paid out. I used to insure with Petplan and they were very good also. Please stay clear of E&L, have heard terrible things of non payments etc.

My horses and dogs are with PetPlan, not the cheapest by any means but they pay out well and the vets seem to like dealing with them....

DON'T TOUCH E&L - Had my dog insured with them when I first got him and they didn't pay out very quicly, took months to sort. I have rider only insurance with NFU - They were fantastic when I fell off last year and my dog is currently insured with Petplan and has been for the last 10 years, they're expensive but always pay out!

We use South Essex and Pet PLan both have been excellent, i sadly had to have my best friend put down last month and South Essex were lovely once I spoke to the permanent staff and got past a useless temp (who left the day after anyway) . they sent a nice letter with my cheque for her full value and noting what they were paying of my vets bill all of which was correct and above board- can I echo the sentinments about E&L, they never pay my friend works for a large equine practice and she is always saying how sorry she feels for clients when the tell her who they are insured with as they always find a loophole to get out of paying or if they do it takes months.

Would have gone for NFU but for some reason they are more expensive than Petplan for me. So Petplan. My vet asks for up-front payment if you're insured with E&L which backs up the stories of non-payment...

I tried NFU a couple of years ago and was told I could only insure the horse if I had a second policy on a trailer / car / .... Ended up with SEIB and had to make a significant claim. They were absolutely brilliant. Not the cheapest but well worth it.

Both mine are with Petplan. One used to be with E and L but they psd me off with increasing my payments without letting me know ( claimed they had, I didn't get their supposed letter). Then they took out a DD earlier than they should have done was due on a Sunday ( date wise) so they took out on the previous Friday ( never had that happen with any DD in over twenty years of having DDs). They tried to duck out by saying it was not their policy to do so but it was in conjunction with the DD guarantee and the bank well I checked their paperwork and small print and spoke to the bank and non described any payments would be taken out earlier if due on a Sat/Sun ( my own experience is they usually go out the next working day ie Monday). What angered me was that the funds were not due in until the Monday and so I got charged. Luckily I managed to get them reversed by the bank but E and L were a complete waste of time. I thought well if they can be like that over a months instalment and bank charges then what would they be like if I ever claimed !
Switched the cob to Petplan and although more expensive the people are really nice who you can speak to and overall it is an excellent policy.
I would really recommend Petplan for veteran or older horses too as they have a lot to offer older horses imo than say E and L for the same age. If I remember correctly because I insured Doug when he was 15 he won't be considered veteran until he is 20. With E and L he would have been on a reduced policy straightaway with less cover.
I have also heard good feedback about NFU as my friend has her horses insured with them.
Good luck
