It's upgrade time for my phone...

Have resisted the lure of the iPhone for many years now because it doesn't fit comfortably in a pocket - necessary seeing as I hack on my own most of the time.

It needs to be robust, have a reasonable battery life and be good at internet stuff.

Any suggestions? I have had a BlackBerry in different models for years now, but could be time for a change now.

(I wish there was a modern day equivalent of the Nokia 5140...it had a thermometer, built-in torch and could withstand being stomped on by malicious pony hooves :D).

Personally, I would go for the best phone you can afford and get onto a 4G network. Then, purchase the best protective cover. Phone technology is advancing so fast at the moment and it would be a real shame not to get a decent model just because of riding - get a phone holder and attach it to your saddle ....

samsung or htc

wouldnt touch an iphone, everyone i know who has them has had them replaced at least once due to breakages!!!! (and they dont even own horses)

my htc/s been bounced across the yard, thrown in puddles, lost in the school, licked and bitten (by horses ;) ) and troden on by me!!! and ignoring the scratches on the side still works perfectly and only had a new screen protector twice (cost about £3)! goes in my pocket, even in its silicon rubber case!
only wish the screen was a bit bigger...gloves and phones never go together

Orange do a tiny little clam shell phone for a tenner and then you have to buy a tenner top up- so you could get that for riding and keep your good phone safe.

Love my Motorola Defy smartphone. Small, tough and runs on Android. I too need something that can withstand my lifestyle, and is not too precious to use daily. Internet and batterygood, excellent camera with one touch upload to Facebook.

Ive got a Nokia N8 at the moment, though due an upgrade in October, but ive really used & abused it, dropped it & god alone knows what else & the battery actually seems to last on it. I would definitely be going for another Nokia.
On the subject of the Samsung Galaxy S2 & S3 i know several people who own them & they all struggle getting a decent signal on them, bearing in mind we are quite rural & the signal can be quite weak in some areas, i can sit in the house & use my Nokia & my partner cant get any signal at all on his S2 & we are both on the same network.

I have a Samsung S2 as well! I have dropped it numerous times and the only evidence is a small crack t the top of the screen. I had it in my front pocket of my hoody, and when putting my drink into the same pocket, my phone jumped out of the other side! :( On stones! :/ So I was surprised how well it coped! :p Its got damp in my not so waterproof coat, dropped everywhere and it stll pretty good! :D x
