or alike????

To any one who has to work shift work like the police, or has OH's, siblings, parents, with horses thats in this sort of job.

Just wanted to know how you fit your horse/s in around your work?? I have always wanted to be a police officer but i am worried that i will not have time for a horse if i eventually get in. I know plenty of people in the job but unfortunately none have horses.

I used to live with a police inspector and I knew a few people that had horses that were in the job. Most of them either had a helpful family member or OH that would do the horse when they were on a silly shift or had them on a part or full livery so they didn't have to worry. I know a firefighter who has a sharer who does her horse on the days that she can't and that seems to work well.

Hiya, I'm a nurse and was a police officer for a year.....not my vocation

I've been doing shift work since 1986 when I trained as a nurse and spent 6 months doing 9-5 in the community........never again, I love shifts, its so much easier to sort out your horse.

My earlies start at 7am and finish at 2:30pm, great in the summer when we have light until 9pm.

Lates start at 2pm until 9:30 and I do the horses in the morning and someone gets them in and puts to bed.

Nights (I hate with a passion, cos I'm old and grumpy) start at 9pm until 7:30am and I sometimes go to the yard in the morning or if I'm shattered (A&E) then I go to bed until about 3-4pm and then go to the yard. I'm really lucky as work/yard/home are all within 5 mins of each other.

We usually have two days off a week and I tend to request alternate weekends off for shows, and some shows are actually on week days, so no problem at all with competing.

Go for it, you only have one life and you never know whats around the corner, even if its not the job for you, at least you can say you gave it a go

My friend is a nurse and my horse is in a field with her horse and her daughter's horse, at our livery yard. We take it in turns to turn out and bring in. For example, if she's on an early (from 7am) I do the girls in the morning and she brings them in when her shift is finished at around 3pm. If she's on a late (from mid-day) she turns them out and her daughter and I bring them in.
It works really well because we both get to have a bit of a lie-in.
Before we became friends, she had them on 'part-part' at the livery yard, where they would do the mornings or evenings that she couldn't.

Recently retired as a Police Officer, but owned horses for the last 7yrs of my Police service. Shift work is great for time off to ride during the day, but a bummer at weekends when you miss shows due to work. Wife helped with horse when I was working, but that wasn't very often. Money wasn't bad though.
Of the shifts I worked days were the most awkward with a 7am start. I did the horses off nights just after 7 before I went to bed. Dedicated or mental not quite sure!!!
All in all not a bad job if you don't mind the mushroom system of management.

Daughter is, it works well ,on earlys she rides after ,on lates rides before ,on nights I have seen her do a night shift get horse ready ,sleep on way to show or event ,compete .sleep on way home and work another night.
So it is better than 9-5

I work shifts (midwife) and I am currently working 3 shifts per week. I 13 hour day and 2 13 hour nights. The only time I struggle to sort my horse out is on the day shift but I can usually either manage to get someone to help of take a late lunch to sort her out. It does mean geting up really early to do her before work though. I have done both 9-5 and shift and actually get more time to see my horse when doing shift work. Although I do full time hours that are actually only 2 days of the week when I couldn't spend alot of time at the yard - the long day shift and the sleep day between my two nights.

I can work up to 34 hours in one shift. I'm also doing a degree with the OU. I couldn't cope without the help from my mum and my 'sharer'.

I'm a Prison Officer and love shift work. I get to spend so much time with my horse. I just have to get someone to bring her in in the winter when I'm working late shifts(once or twice a week). I do work every other weekend but I get days off during the week, which I like as I prefer to compete during the week. Other liveries that work 9-5 are always whinging in the winter that they can only hack out or ride on weekends but I can ride whenever.

I've just left my job as a police officer.

I worked 7am-4pm or 5pm depending on day although we never finished on time.

3pm-2am or 5pm -3am again we never finished at that time due to the amount of work we had.

Night shift was 10pm - 7am the only shift we mainly finished on time. Although nightshifts would always fall on a rest day, so that day was wasted sleeping.

You cannot refuse working beyond your shift if you have work to finish unlike a 9-5 job.

You won't have many free weekends and if you give evidence in court they always work so its on one of your rest days.

It leaves you tired, ruins your social life and you'll find you won't have many weekends off.

On the up side shift work is quite good, especially having days off during the week, its a rewarding job and you can have a lot of fun just make sure you have help with your horse.

We have 2 people in the police force at current yard, and 2 at a previous yard. I even got stopped by a police car last week out hacking as the PC wanted help on finding a livery yard!!
On DIY they managed to come and do either end of the day, and swapped with another livery to help but they tend to work so that you either work a 7-3 (eg) so can do horses after or a 1-10(eg) so can do horses before.

I've just started doing shift work as civvy working for police and as an overall opinion I love it. I seem to have more time to spend with horses and OH as i try to see horses in the week when OH at work. I only share a horse but if I owned one I would not see it as a prob as long as had someone to bring in when on lates in winter.

With regards to weekends - only get 2.5 off then 3.5 on so bit naff for shows. Nights havent been a prob - i find i sleep less but dont get too tired and on last night only have couple of hours sleep so dont waste rest day.

Go for it!
