Who thinks we shouldn't put the clocks back?

Nope, if we want to stop changing the clocks we should stick with GMT, as that is the "proper" time for the UK.

BST doesn't actually give us more light, it just moves the time of the light so there would be winners and loosers if we used it permanently, people can always adjust their routine during winter to cope with the light.

An hour/two(?) won't really make a difference to how dark it is for me...even when Im at home in NI...

I don't see why it should change, although it would stop people moaning that the don't understand/forgot each year! :D

Absolutely! I'm not bothered by changing all the clocks, watches and electrical appliances in the house: it's the getting up in the pitch black in the morning because the world's an hour earlier than it was - it's so depressing!

Isn't it for the farmers? (Not sure where I got that from) :o

Yes BST or Daylight Saving Time was introduced in 1915 to help the farmers (who were short staffed due to WW1) by giving them lighter nights to help with the harvet.

I was always told it was so that paperboys wouldn't be at risk from paedos first thing in the morning :confused:

Nope, when they brought in daylight saving they didn't know what paedos were! It was for the farmers as above. However many of the arguements about it now centre around school children going to and from school, apparently there are more road accidents if they have to walk to school in the dark.

The people that use this arguement fail to realise that if we set the clocks to have light earlier in the morning it will get dark earlier, there are a set number of daylight hours, so you might "save" the children from walking to school in the dark but they will probably have to walk home in the dark!

the majority of school children finish school at 3:30pm - 4pm so wouldn't be going home in the dark regardless.
I expect at some point they will have another try at either keeping the clocks the same all year round or going for double summer time. (according to my parents the last time they tried it, it wasn't a success) I just find it so depressing getting up in the dark, and by the time the clocks change it's not like I can ride after work even if they were to keep the same time. I prefer it this way and then I can go jogging before work and hopefully for the first few weeks of the horses coming in at night they will go out in the morning while it is getting daylight. It's all about getting the most from the daylight hours we have and there's not enough in the winter whichever way the clocks go. GMT is the time this country should be on and if we have to stay on one time all year round I'd rather stick with that and not have the hour extra daylight in the evening than have to go to work in the dark in the morning in the winter.

Our clocks don't change until November 7th, can't remember when UK ones change. Clock changes make no difference one way or the other to me, half the time I don't even know what day it is, let alone the time :o

My daughter leaves for school at 7.30am, and gets home at around 5pm - in winter she never sees the house in daylight during the week at all.
