I am looking to employ either a groom or a groom and rider 5 days a week mornings only.

Would it be better to go for a groom that is a good rider, or employ a groom for the stable work and a rider for exercising?

What can you afford? The last but one season I had a good rider, who also happened to be a 500% groom helping me with my pointers - she was also a qualified McTimoney practitioner, so she did their backs too - but charged me her professional rates for that aspect - which was fine. Personally for my horses, competant rider is important, but when they come back from the gallops or whatever, I want them to be washed doen properly, rugged up correctly etc. and clipped out at appropriate times ........It was not cheap to fiind the paragon I had for one year - but well worth it.......Last season my paragon had much more back work so did not need to come to me and earn money, so we did the work ourselves (and I work full-time) so it was tough, and I felt myself being very relieved when both horses were 'broken' by early May and I could tuen them out!!

Thank you all.

It is a dilema, I have interviewed a lovely lady but she does not ride, but has years of experience, so my other thought would be is to get a rider in 2 to 3 days a week and she could maybe lunge on other days.

I have got 8 to do, and there is no way that I can do them all before going to work in the morning even working half days 4 days a week, so this if I can find someone seems the perfect solution, its just deciding what to do for the best.
